Austrian Skiers Roll
In Wengen, Switzerland, Andreas Schifferer sped to his third World Cup downhill victory of the season and ended his Austrian teammate Hermann Maier’s winning streak at five races.
Schifferer, part of the wave of young Austrians dominating men’s alpine skiing, gave Austria its 100th men’s World Cup victory. Austrians also finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
John Verrey, 76, who won an Olympic silver medal in skiing as part of a 1948 Swiss team and who was a pioneer in 1966 in teaching blind people to ski with tethers or guides, has died of cancer in Naperville, Ill. After World War II, he moved to the United States and helped capture Nazi war criminals.
