Russian Skater Wins

Compiled From Wire Services

With a graceful free skate, and some help from stumbling rivals, five-time Russian champion Maria Butyrskaya, 25, moved up from fifth place to win the European title and give her country a second straight sweep of the gold medals at the championships in Milan, Italy.

Andy Gabel broke his own U.S. record in the time trial at the U.S. Olympic short track speedskating trials in Lake Placid, N.Y., to take an insurmountable lead in the competition and earn the chance to race in every event at the Winter Olympics.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Cathy Turner finished second in her time trial, but slipped in another race. If she qualifies for the Winter Games she will race only in the relays.
