Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: What to do with lead pencils when we think they are too short to write with, or ones your kids bring home at the end of the school year when they’ve cleaned out their desk and found all these stubs? Donate them to your public library. Talk about recycling! Kathi White, Hutchinson, Kan.

Dear Heloise: I recently burned one of my pots while boiling potatoes for dinner. At first I was in a panic, but then I recalled an old-fashioned remedy my late mother used.

Cover the burnt parts with cream of tartar, then add a small amount of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes. Using a soft spatula, loosen the burn marks. Keep on simmering for a short while.

Remove the pot from the stove and wash it with either a soft sponge or nylon-net pad or something similar. If the pot is not fully clean, you may have to repeat this procedure. - Judith Weil, Hollywood, Fla.
