Watts Slick In Husky Win

Donald Watts scored six of his 28 points in overtime as the Washington Huskies, who led by as many as 14 points in the second half, edged visiting California 86-84 Thursday.

Watts, son of former NBA player Slick Watts, sank 16 of 20 free-throw attempts to tie his career high with his 28-point performance.

Washington (12-3, 5-1 Pac-10) got 24 points from Deon Luton and 16 points and 12 rebounds from 7-footer Todd MacCulloch.

Geno Carlisle led Cal (6-8, 2-4) with 20 points, including a 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 76 and send the game into overtime.

In the overtime, Patrick Femerling gave Washington the lead with a layup on a pass from Watts with 3:40 to go, and Watts made it 80-78 when he got an offensive rebound and put back a 5-footer.

A free throw by Watts gave the Huskies an 86-82 lead with 30.1 seconds to go before a dunk by Kenyon Jones cut Cal’s deficit to 86-84.

MacCulloch was fouled by Sean Marks with 10.7 seconds on the clock, but missed both free-throw tries.

Thomas Kilgore drove into the key and passed off to Jones, who fumbled the pass and was fighting for the ball with Femerling as time expired.

Washington improved to 5-1 in Pac-10 play for the first time since 1986. It’s the first time since 1984 that the Huskies have been 12-3. They ended a three-game losing streak against Cal.

The Huskies, now 8-1 at home, looked like they were cruising with leads of 56-42 and 62-48 in the second half. They were in front 70-60 with 5:28 to go.

But the Bears came back.

Sean Marks hit a 3-pointer with 1:11 to go to cut Washington’s lead to 73-70 and connected on another 3-pointer with 18.3 seconds on the clock to get the Bears to within 74-73.

Watts sank two free throws with 17.9 seconds left to give Washington a 76-73 lead before Carlisle’s 3-pointer.

At Tempe, Ariz., Corey Benjamin scored a career-high 36 points as the Beavers broke a six-game losing streak with a victory over the Sun Devils.

Oregon State (10-8, 1-6) won its first conference road game in 21 tries and ended the game on a 14-1 run.

Arizona State (12-7, 2-4) scored only one point after Eddie House hit a 12-foot baseline jumper for a 60-56 lead with 5:52 remaining.

The Wildcats (16-3, 6-0) held Oregon scoreless over the first 5-1/2 minutes, a span in which the Ducks (7-9, 2-5) committed seven turnovers and six fouls.

Jamar Curry led Oregon with 11 points.
