Cheney Defeats Lc Boys In Unsatisfying Result
It was one of those games where you didn’t know which team won from listening to the coaches afterward.
After sifting through both teams’ mistakes - and there were plenty - the Cheney and Lake City boys basketball teams at least provided an entertaining finish Tuesday.
Cheney, far superior athletically, fought off a game push from Lake City in the second half as the Blackhawks prevailed 49-42 in a Border League game at LC.
“When we play like that I get worn out,” said Cheney coach Denny Humphrey, whose team moved into a tie for first place with Coeur d’Alene at 10-2. “I guess our effort was good, but our decision-making and our play out of a couple of individuals was very disturbing. A couple of guys had bad practices last night and it carried over tonight. I guess when you come out on the (good end) of one you have to be happy about it.”
You could take out Humphrey’s name and insert the name of Lake City coach Jim Winger - at least regarding poor decisions.
“I don’t know what it is, we’re just our own worst enemy,” said Winger, whose team evened its league mark at 6-6. “We don’t have enough stallions to do the things we’re doing. We can’t give a team the ball as many times as we did.”
LC (9-7 overall) had a handful of chances in the final 3 minutes. Two free throws by Timberwolf Petra Jo Thiringer tied it at 41-41 with 2:56 left.
After getting the ball back on a jump ball, LC moved the ball around Cheney’s extended zone defense for 50 seconds before LC’s J.J. Barlow had a wide-open look at the basket from 10 feet on the baseline on a shot that would have given the Timberwolves the lead.
An over-the-back rebounding foul was called on LC and Cheney’s Chris Bond made two free throws to give the Blackhawks the lead for good, 43-41, with 1:45 left.
LC still had three more wide-open shots during the next minute, but the shots came up short.
The T-Wolves were forced to foul the final 43 seconds and the Blackhawks (13-3) responded by making all four foul shots to hold off LC.
Both teams played good defense. Winger said his team has played well at home just once out of 10 games.
“I’m perplexed,” said Winger. “I don’t understand why we don’t come out and get after it at the start of the game at home. I don’t know why we go out stargazing.”
