Nazr Mohammad, who spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble, flipped the ball in off the backboard as time expired to give No. 7 Kentucky a 63-61 victory over Vanderbilt on Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.

Drew Maddux hit a high-arching 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds left, tying the game for the 13th time at 61-61. But Jeff Sheppard passed the ball to Mohammad in the forecourt. The 6-foot-10 junior center started to drive, looked at the clock and then flipped the ball in off the glass for the game-winning shot.

Referee Gerald Boudreaux called the shot good. Vanderbilt coach Jan van Breda Kolff walked over to the officials on the sideline and started complaining. Vandy players refused to leave the floor, and Maddux tossed the ball up in the air as the Wildcats headed for the locker room.

Kentucky (19-2, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) had a tough time in pulling out the victory over Vanderbilt (14-6, 3-4). The Wildcats never led by more than four points and the teams swapped the lead 15 times.

(9) Connecticut 63, Providence 56

At Providence, R.I., the Huskies averted a Big East upset.

Kevin Freeman, who sat out Saturday’s win at Syracuse with a sprained right wrist, returned to score 17 points for Connecticut (18-3, 8-2). The Friars fell to 8-10, 3-6.

(24) Xavier 93, Duquesne 71

At Cincinnati, James Posey scored a career-high 25 points, most of them on dunks and layups, and matched his career high with 15 rebounds as the Musketeers (13-5, 5-3 Atlantic Ten) beat the Dukes (8-12, 3-5).
