Gas Pipeline Project To Begin This Summer

From Staff And Wire Reports

Northern Lights Inc. could start construction of a new natural gas pipeline to Newport from a point south of Sandpoint by early summer, spokeswoman Elissa Glassman said Thursday.

Members of the Sandpoint-based cooperative approved the $12 million project Monday night by a vote of 2,309 to 310.

Glassman said the vote will allow officials to accelerate negotiations for environmental permits and franchise agreements with the communities the pipeline will serve.

Besides Newport, those are Oldtown, Sagle, and Priest River. A potential 4,500 customers live in those areas. Construction will take two years, Glassman said. , DataTimes
