Dollar Rises Against Yen, Mark
The dollar rose against the Japanese yen Thursday after traders found no surprises in Japan’s highly anticipated plan to revitalize its ailing banking sector.
The U.S. currency also rose vs. the German mark after a German central bank official predicted that his country’s interest rates would be stable.
Japan said it would assume control over banks burdened with bad loans and gradually shut them down, responding to criticism that it has not strongly addressed banks’ huge debt problems. But currency traders erased gains earned by the yen this week.
