Intel Shutdowns Will Idle 1,750 Workers

Intel Corp. plans weeklong shutdowns at two plants in Aloha, Ore., starting Monday and will offer voluntary severance packages to manufacturing workers.

The shutdowns will affect 1,750 workers, who will go without pay unless they opt to use paid vacation or personal days.

The plants will be retooled during the hiatus. The newer of the two plants, called Fab 15, will stop making older versions of Intel’s Pentium II chips and will start producing the chip sets that support the microprocessor, or the brains of a personal computer.

The older facility, called Fab 5, will change its product lineup to include less-sophisticated support chips.
