Panel Will Discuss Response To Aryan March

Not every parade marks a community celebration. Some set off civic alarms.

“In It Together: A Conversation About Race” brings together a panel of local leaders in North Idaho to explain their response to plans for an Aryan Nations parade in Coeur d’Alene on July 18. The hourlong event, sponsored by The Spokesman-Review, will occur this evening at 7 and be taped for broadcast at 10 on KHQ, channel 6.

If the All-Star Game extends into extra innings, show time may be affected because the game will be shown in its entirety.

Panelists will explore the challenges and complexities they encountered when the white separatist organization applied for a parade permit. Among community officials’ concerns besides their disdain for the Aryans’ racist message: the potential for violence and national media attention that could tarnish the region’s image.

Film clips of area citizens’ perceptions of race issues will be interspersed with panel discussion.
