Eva Carpenter St. Maries, Idaho

Service for Eva N. Carpenter, 86, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Carpenter, who was born in Harvard, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She grew up in Harvard and then lived in Rosalia, Wash., before moving to St. Joe City near St. Maries.

Mrs. Carpenter moved to St. Maries in 1945 and worked at Red’s Coney Island and tended bar at the Golden Eagle Tavern.

She also worked at C & M Cafe and later lived in Marble Creek near St. Maries and managed Marble Creek Services.

Mrs. Carpenter retired in 1980 and returned to St. Maries.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lealand, in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Lee Carpenter, and a daughter, Sharon Derry, both of St. Maries; a brother, Lyman Bannister of Spokane; a sister, Moretta Taylor of St. Maries; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Rose Churchill Spokane

Memorial service for Rose Churchill, 100, is set for 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial was held at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Churchill, who was born in Plaza, Wash., died Monday.

She graduated in 1918 from Rosalia (Wash.) High School and had played the piano for the Pamona State and National Grange drill teams.

Mrs. Churchill was a charter member of the Plaza Grange and played the piano for them.

She moved to Spokane 12 years ago and was involved in Project Joy.

Her husband died in 1968.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Phillips and Majorie Masek, both of Spokane; two brothers, Bill and Harold Peterschick, both of Spokane; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Village.

Christopher Hughes Spokane

Memorial service for Christopher R. “Chris” Hughes will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

A lifetime resident of Spokane, Mr. Hughes died July 3. He was 48.

Mr. Hughes graduated from Rogers High School and served with the Army. He also worked for a trucking company.

Survivors include his wife, Diana; a daughter, Melissa Hughes of Spokane; his mother, Mary Mumma of Spokane; two brothers, Steven and Michael Hughes, both of Spokane; three sisters, Linda Hughes, Paulette White and Denna Pickard, all of Spokane; and a granddaughter.

Grace Tuttle Clarkston, Wash.

Memorial service for Grace Irene Tuttle, 89, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Estates in Clarkston. A second memorial service will be on July 17 at 1 p.m. at the Asotin (Wash.) United Methodist Church. Vasser-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tuttle, who was born in California, died July 5 of a heart attack.

She grew up and attended schools in the Seattle area and then moved to Wauconda, Wash., in 1942 and ranched until settling in Avery, Idaho, in 1951.

Mrs. Tuttle moved to Greenacres in 1970 and traveled south each winter. She moved to Asotin in 1991 to be near family and then moved to Evergreen Estates in Clarkston in 1997.

Her husband, Gordon, died in 1991.

She was a member of the Asotin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert Tuttle of Asotin; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Doris St. Amand Smelterville, Idaho

Memorial service for Doris Jensen St.Amand, 74, will be at 1 p.m. July 18, at Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery in Spokane. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. St. Amand, who was born in Troy, Idaho, died Tuesday. She graduated from Kellogg High School and worked at Kellogg Hospital and later at Bunker Hill Zinc Plant during World War II.

Mrs. St. Amand lived in Spokane before returning to the Silver Valley in 1950 and working for Pik-Kwik Grocery as a checker.

Survivors include her husband, Damase; a son, Rick St. Amand of Chattaroy; a sister, Joyce McFerran of Grandview, Wash.; two grandsons and three step-great-grandchildren.

Travis ‘Blackie’ Day Osburn, Idaho

No service will be held for Travis C. “Blackie” Day, 81, at his request. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Day, who was born in North Dakota, died Saturday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1953 from Snohomish, Wash., and worked as a miner and a personnel manager for Sunshine Mining Co. for more than 20 years.

Mr. Day also worked at Star Mine for 10 years and various other local mines. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

His wife, Lyyle, died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Wilson of Missouri; a son, Royal Parrish of Osburn; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Ethel ‘Bubs’ Carlson Sandpoint

Memorial service for Ethel “Bubs” Carlson, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pack River Cemetery near Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Carlson, who was born in South Dakota, died July 2.

She moved to the Gold Creek area near Sandpoint in 1918 and attended Grouse Creek and Pack River Schools.

Mrs. Carlson worked as a cook at the Pastime Cafe, Kaniksu Restaurant and Sandpoint Manor. She also tended bar at the Tam O Shanter Tavern.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Harry Gotham and Harold Carlson.

Survivors include seven children, Mabel Schilling and Harlan Gotham, both of Alaska, Linda Sapp of Florida, Peggy Kedish of Sandpoint, Michael Gotham of Priest River, Idaho, Robert Carlson of Puyallup, Wash., and Janice Best of Hope, Idaho; two sisters, Betty Burt and Doris Keener, both of Sandpoint; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Julia Grubbs Post Falls

Burial for Julia M. Grubbs, 79, will be at 5 p.m. today at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mrs. Grubbs, who was born in Buffalo, Wyo., died June 30 after a brief illness.

She moved to the Post Falls area 27 years ago and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Votaw, died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Allison Schoonover of Iowa; four sons, Charles Grubbs of Arizona, George and Brian Grubbs, both of Colorado, and Samuel Grubbs of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Daisy Huggins of Bonners Ferry, Betty Smith of Pasco, Wash., and Dixie Patterson of Spokane; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Dannie O’Brien Spokane

Memorial service for Dannie G. O’Brien, 80, will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. O’Brien, who was a 68-year resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

He was born in Dickinson, N.D., and graduated from high school in Spokane.

In 1953 he married Joan Britton in Spokane.

He was president of Retail Clerks Union Local 1439 for many years until his retirement in 1974.

He and his wife spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David and John O’Brien, both of Spokane, and Daniel O’Brien of Cheney; two daughters, Kathleen Conway of Spokane and Patty Loveall of Issaquah, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Spokane Police Department Chaplain Fund.

Pauline (Bollons) Hocking Spokane

Funeral Mass for Pauline (Bollons) Hocking, 85, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hocking, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She graduated in 1931 from North Central High School and married James Hocking that year.

Mr. and Mrs. Hocking owned and operated the Hocking Drug Co., originally founded by his father, Joseph Hocking, in 1889 as Spokane’s first drug store.

Her husband died in 1946, and she managed the store until it closed in 1960. She then became a head savings teller at Washington Trust Bank until her retirement in 1977.

In the 1940s she was the executive secretary of the Washington State Pharmaceutical Association, a member of the Early Birds, Brotherhood of Friends and Ladies of the Elks.

Mrs. Hocking was also a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and of Holy Trinity.

She is survived by a son, John Hocking of Spokane.

Jim Kelly Seaside, Ore.

Memorial Mass for Jim Kelly, 29, was June 29 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Seaside.

Mr. Kelly, who was born in Spokane, died June 26.

He lived in Spokane until moving in 1991 to Seaside, where he was a self-employed roofer and remodeling carpenter.

Survivors include his special friend, Sara Murphy of Seaside; a son, Thomas Kelly of Seaside; his parents, Ray and Sharon Kelly of Bethel, Alaska; a sister, Katy Neal of Spokane; and his grandmother, Margaret Wheeler of The Dalles, Ore.

Robert Dyche Spokane

Memorial service for Robert F. Dyche, 77, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Veradale United Church of Christ. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dyche, who was born in Kamiah, Idaho, died Monday.

He graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and served with the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Dyche taught at Central Valley High School for 27 years before retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Valley Crosstrailers Square Dance Club, Disabled American Veterans and Toastmasters.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred; a daughter, Evlyn Crossman of Spokane; a son, Hubert Dyche of Spokane; a sister, Willa Fulton of Kenai, Alaska; and two grandchildren.
