Pauline (Bollons) Hocking Spokane

Funeral Mass for Pauline (Bollons) Hocking, 85, was Friday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hocking, who was born in Spokane to Thomas and Bessie Bollons, died Tuesday. Her mother was a pioneer Washington Territory resident.

She graduated in 1931 from North Central High School and married James Hocking that year.

Mr. and Mrs. Hocking owned and operated the Hocking Drug Co., originally founded by his father, Joseph Hocking, in 1889 as Spokane’s first drug store.

Her husband died in 1946 and she managed the store until it closed in 1960. She then became a head savings teller at Washington Trust Bank until her retirement in 1977.

In the 1940s she was the executive secretary of the Washington State Pharmaceutical Association, a member of the Early Birds, Brotherhood of Friends and Ladies of the Elks.

Mrs. Hocking was also a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and of Holy Trinity.

She is survived by a son, John Hocking of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Merle Owens Ione, Wash.

Memorial for Merle P. Owens, 68, will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Owens, who was born in Helena, died July 3.

She worked as an insurance adjustor for 20 years and had owned the Broken Wheel Trading Post with her husband for 17 years.

Mrs. Owens was an 11-year resident of Pend Oreille County.

Survivors include her husband, William; two daughters, Easter Stepper and Donna Galloway; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Malcolm Fredstrom Sandpoint

Service for Malcolm Fredstrom, 89, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Coffelt’s Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Sandpoint.

Mr. Fredstrom, who was born in Kootenai, Idaho, died Thursday. He grew up and attended schools in Bonner County and then worked for the mill’s blacksmith shop in Sandpoint and then for the filing shop.

Mr. Fredstrom drove a truck for a local beer distributor for a short time and then worked at Sandpoint Motor Co.

He served with the Army Air Force during World War II and returned to Sandpoint, where he continued to work for Sandpoint Motor Co. in the body shop for 10 years.

Mr. Fredstrom later worked for North Idaho Equipment and retired from McFarland Pole Co.

He was a member of Sandpoint Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; three sons, Neal and Darrell Fredstrom, both of Sandpoint, and Bruce Fredstrom of New Brunswick, Canada; a stepson, Neil Ashley of Arizona; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Sally Haines Spokane

Funeral for Sally C. Haines, 49, will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Fairmount Memorial Park Sunset Chapel. Burial will follow. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Seattle, Mrs. Haines died Wednesday of breast cancer.

She graduated from the University of Washington and had served in the Army Reserves.

In 1977 she married Manford Haines in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Haines worked for the Social Security Department as a claims representative. She later was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Amy and Sarah Haines, both of Spokane; her mother, Sylvia Hansen; and a brother, Harold Hansen of Seattle.

Robert Beck Lakewood, Wash.

No service will be held for Robert A. Beck, 57, at his request. American Memorial Funeral Home in Tacoma is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Beck, who was born in Spokane, died June 24.

He served in the Navy from 1956 to 1960 and then worked in the construction industry in Spokane.

Mr. Beck moved to the Bremerton area in the early 1970s, where he worked for various concrete companies.

He was attending Clover Park Technical College in Tacoma at the time of his death.

Survivors include three sons, Rick, Shawn and Brant Beck, all of Spokane; a stepson, Rick Putnam of Kodiak, Alaska; a daughter, Vicki Beck of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Stephanie Putnam of Las Vegas and Margo Putnam of Phoenix; two brothers, Michael and Charles Beck, both of Spokane; four sisters, Peggy Johnson of Spokane, Anita Whiteaker of Cheney, Dorothy Roberts of Port Orchard, Wash., and Katherine Ticker of Portland; and six grandchildren.

Marjorie Wellington Spokane

Private memorial service for Marjorie J. Wellington, 84, will be today at Saltese Cemetery in Veradale. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wellington, who was born in Dover, Ohio, died Monday.

A 10-year Spokane resident, she was a teacher in her early years and later was a homemaker.

Her husband, Edward, died in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Di Anne Lewis and Jane Bialkowsky, both of Veradale; two stepdaughters, Wendy Wellington of Kirkland, Wash., and Patricia Turner of Seattle; a sister, Victoria Gibson of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, James Haas of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Edward Gonyou Spokane

Vigil service for Edward Davis Gonyou, 94, is set for 6 p.m. Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery iN Spokane.

Mr. Gonyou, who was born in Superior, Wis., died Sunday.

He was the owner and operator of a financial company.

Mr. Gonyou was a 90-year Spokane resident, and a member of St. Pius Parish, Knights of Columbus, Sierra Club and Hayden Lake (Idaho) Country Club.

His wife, Hazel, died in 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Gonyou of Hayden Lake and Mary Lou Beaulieu of Westbridge, British Columbia; a sister, Mary Pratt of Spokane; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814; or the House of Charity.

Mary Betts-DuMonte Alameda, Calif.

Memorial service for Mary Betts-DuMonte, 50, will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rose Garden at Manito Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Betts-DuMonte, who was born in Rochester, Minn., died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane as an infant and graduated from Holy Names Academy.

Ms. Betts-DuMonte was a homemaker and lived in California for the past 29 years.

Survivors include a son, Justin DuMonte of Alameda; her parents, Richard and Aileen Betts of Spokane; two brothers, James and Richard Betts, both of Seattle; and three sisters, Julie Betts and Vicki Scarcello, both of Spokane, and Lillian Stott of Big Fork, Mont.
