GTE has proposed a plan allowing Tensed residents to call St. Maries and surrounding areas free of long-distance charges. The proposal, brought before the Idaho Public Utilities Commission, would offer the toll-free service at an additional charge to the GTE Community Plus calling plan.
BONNER COUNTY
Sandpoint
McFarland Cascade has announced it will close part of its timber processing plant. The company no longer will do wood treatment at the Baldy Mountain Road facility but will continue buying and manufacturing poles.
Priest Lake
The Blue Diamond Marina on Cavanaugh Bay will hold a grand opening this weekend to celebrate $500,000 in improvements. Marina operators Carolyn and George Deshler have put in new docks and restrooms and plan to open a restaurant later this summer. The grand opening will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Events will include free pedal boat rides, chain saw art demonstrations, canoeing and boat demonstrations. The deep-water marina has 48 slips and is located five miles east of Coolin.

Bonners Ferry
Renowned photographer Jerry Pavia of Bonners Ferry will lead an excursion into Boulder Meadows on Saturday to teach wildflower photography. The workshop is the second in a series of programs being sponsored by the Audubon Society. Participants will meet at the Bonners Ferry Tourist Center at 8 a.m. to carpool to the meadows. KOOTENAI COUNTY
Coeur d’Alene
Two bull moose yearlings that found their way into the U.S. Forest Service nursery in Coeur d’Alene on Monday will be used for a poaching study conducted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Both moose have been fitted with radio collars and released near Mount Spokane.
Post Falls
State and local fire crews hiked 30 minutes through heavy underbrush to reach a fire Monday afternoon at the top of Big Rock several miles from Post Falls. Helicopters were used to get water near the site. Post Falls Fire Protection District crews helped Idaho Department of Lands crews fight the small fire even though it was outside the fire district’s boundaries.
Coeur d’Alene
Job Service is offering extended hours on Wednesdays starting today. The office at 1221 Ironwood Drive will be open until 7 p.m. each Wednesday during a trial period. The intent is to accommodate employers and job applicants who can’t conveniently visit during regular business hours. For more information, call 769-1558.

Moscow
Idaho Public Television’s local channel, KUID, will air the “Presidential Dialogue on Race” featuring Spokane Indian writer and filmmaker Sherman Alexie on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. The Channel 12 program is scheduled to follow the 7:30 “Dialogue” show, which will discuss community reaction to the Aryan Nations march in Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.
Moscow
Latah County human rights activists will hold a Hands Against Hate event Saturday in response to the Aryan Nations march in Coeur d’Alene that day. The Moscow event is scheduled from 9 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. at the Moscow Farmers’ Market.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg
A 14-year-old has been arrested by the Shoshone County sheriff’s office in connection with an alleged arson fire that destroyed the former Pat’s Boarding House. The Wardner teen has been charged with one count of arson.

Entries are due by Tuesday for Silver Hoops, a three-on-three basketball tournament to be held July 25 in Kellogg City Park. The event is open to people age 9 and older. Cost is $40 for teams 10th grade and older and $25 for teams ninth grade and younger. A late fee of $10 will be charged after Tuesday. Snowshoe and Kootenai Winter Sports Inc. will sponsor the Turner Burner Mountain Bike Event on July 25 at Turner Mountain in Libby.
