Peaceful Slumber
Susan K, a five-day-old female black rhinoceros, takes a snooze in the sunshine at the San Francisco Zoo Tuesday. The 93 pound infant is the 12th born to Ellie and was sired by Ellie’s 9-year-old mate, Gene. Black rhinos are one of the world’s most endangered species. In the wild, the black rhino population has plunged to about 2,400 because of loss of habitat and poaching.
