Spokane Rallies, Knocks Everett For A Loop Hooper’S Relief Pitching, Freitas’ Double Lift Indians Over Aquasox

Spokane reliever Jim Hooper (3-1) threw four scoreless innings Tuesday afternoon, helping the Indians rally past Everett 8-5 in a Northwest League game at Memorial Stadium.

Everett starter Aaron Looper left after five innings, with a 5-4 lead, having coaxed nine ground outs and allowing only two earned runs.

Spokane (21-14) began its rally in the seventh against Orin Kawahara (0-1), the second of four AquaSox pitchers.

Paul Phillips singled, stole second base and scored on Ryan Fry’s single. Fry then scored the go-ahead run on Jeremy Freitas’ second double of the game and eighth of the year.

Spokane added insurance runs in the ninth, as Rico Montas singled to score Jeremy Dodson and Fry.

Hooper, John Wayne Lee and Robbie Morrison held Everett (15-20) to four hits in the final six innings. Morrison pitched the ninth for his fifth save and Spokane’s 11th. The Indians lead the league in saves.

Rick Southall’s three-run homer highlighted Everett’s five-run fifth off Spokane starter Matt Burch. Burch, from Virginia Commonwealth and Kansas City’s first-round selection in this year’s free-agent draft, has an 8.31 ERA in four starts.

Spokane’s Merrell Ligons singled in the second inning for his first RBI since June 29. Catcher Pedro Herrera had his biggest game, going 3 for 4 with a fourth-inning RBI double.

Everett still leads the season series 5-4. Spokane is 8-11 on the road and 7-8 against fellow North Division teams, including the AquaSox.

Spokane begins a five-game home series against Southern Oregon at 7:05 tonight, with Corey Thurman (1-2) scheduled to start. The Indians are 13-3 at home and 14-6 against the South Division.
