LeAnn McCormick Spokane

Vigil service for LeAnn M.E. McCormick, 30, is set for 7 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Rockford. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss McCormick, who was a lifetime resident of the Spokane area, died Sunday.

She graduated from Spokane Community College with a nursing degree and worked as a registered nurse for Deaconess Hospital for the past eight years.

Miss McCormick was a member of St. Joseph Church in Rockford.

Survivors include her parents, Ron and Lee McCormick of Rockford; four brothers, Charles and Joe McCormick, both of Spokane, Michael McCormick of Deer Park and Matthew McCormick of Rockford; and five sisters, Margaret McCormick and Kathryn Foster, both of Spokane, Johnna Patterson of Rockford, Cynthia Concannon of Portland and Mary Parker of Valleyford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Magdalena ‘Madeline’ Scher Spokane

Funeral Mass for Magdalena B. “Madeline” Scher, 91, is planned for 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scher, a 62-year resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was born in St. Anthony, N.D., and worked at the Shack restaurant and Johnson’s Cafe for 20 years before she owned Madeline’s Cafe for seven years.

Mrs. Scher was a member of St. Thomas More Parish and the Waitresses Union.

Her husband, John Scher, died in 1943.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Scher of Spokane and John Scher of Miami; three daughters, Gloria Johnston of Spokane, Shareen Ketchem of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Patricia Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Emma Boehm of Mandan, N.D.; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Henry Woods Spokane

No service will be held for Henry M. Woods, 81, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Woods, who died Saturday, was a 33-year resident of Spokane.

He was born in Jefferson, Minn., and worked in the painting industry. He worked at Lakeland Village until it closed and then worked for Spokane Falls Community College and the YMCA day-care centers.

Mr. Woods was a member of the Foster Grandparent Program and was on its board of directors.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Marion Krueger of Portland; two brothers, Earl and Alvin Woods of Puyallup, Wash.; a sister, Jean Duncan of Redmond, Ore.; and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Lola Collins Spokane

Funeral for Lola Ann Collins, 67, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Collins, who was born in Payette, Idaho, died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane for 67 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Umphrey Collins, died in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Crabtree of Spokane and Steve Collins of Olympia; two daughters, Karen Bricker of Spokane and Cindy Bennewitz of Metaline, Wash.; three sisters, Dorothy Scott and Donna Dunn, both of Arkansas, and Roxie Silkett of Renton, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Violette Armstrong Spokane

Visitation for Violette N. Armstrong, 89, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park Sunset Mausoleum Chapel. Burial will follow.

Mrs. Armstrong, a 48-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Renton, Wash.

Mrs. Armstorng, who worked as a secretary and was actively involved with the group that instituted the Guilds’ School.

Her husband, Leo Armstrong, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Stueve of Spokane; a sister, Dorothy Pistoresi of Renton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Richard Keating Spokane

No service will be held for Richard R. Keating at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Keating, 60, died Saturday. He was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He graduated in 1955 from Rogers High School and served in the Army.

Mr. Keating worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a switchman.

Survivors include two daughters, Muriel McAuliff of Spokane and Nicole Keating of Salem, Ore.; his mother, Marion Hudson of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Ed Johns Spokane

Private service for Ed B. Johns, 86, will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johns, who was born in San Bernardino, Calif., died Saturday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in California and then worked in the construction industry.

Mr. Johns also operated three citrus farms and then worked for Ventura County Flood Control in California as a supervisor, retiring in 1974.

He moved to Priest Lake in 1984 prior to moving to Post Falls in 1994.

Mr. Johns recently moved to Spokane.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the National Rifle Association and was a former Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his former wife and companion, Flora Johns of Spokane; three sons, Paul Johns of California, Gary Johns of Spokane and Del Johns of Salmon, Idaho; two daughters, Leanne and Alice Johns, both of Spokane; a sister, Gwenyth Wayne of California; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Levi Gardner Seattle

Visitation for Levi S. Gardner, 88, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Gardner, who was born in Memphis, Tenn., died Sunday.

He moved to Spokane in 1952 and worked as a Pullman porter for the railroad until his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Gardner was a member and a trustee of Calvary Baptist Church.

In 1995 he moved to Yakima and then to Seattle.

His wife, Sara Gardner, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Gardner of Seattle; a sister, Magnolia O’Neal of Memphis; and six grandchildren.

Robert Webb-Martin Spokane

Funeral for Robert A. Webb-Martin, 44, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Webb-Martin, who was born in Spokane, died July 12.

He was a supervisor in the metal fabrication industry, and served in the Coast Guard from 1971 until his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Webb-Martin was a resident of Spokane for 18 years.

Survivors include a son, Robert Webb of Medford, Ore.; two daughters, Donna and Nina Webb, both of Medford; his father, Billy Webb of Nine Mile Falls; a brother, Billy Webb, and a sister, Marjorie Mulvey, both of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Robert Van Thiel Spokane

Vigil service for Robert M. Van Thiel, 76, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at Assumption Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Inurnment will be at St. George Cemetery in Kenosha, Wis., at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Van Thiel, who died Friday, was a 23-year resident of Spokane.

He was born in Kenosha and served in the Army Air Corps for three years during World War II.

Mr. Van Thiel worked as a letter carrier for 27 years in Kenosha and Scottsdale, Ariz.

He volunteered at the House of Charity in Spokane for 19 years and was a member of the Assumption Catholic community since 1976.

Mr. Van Thiel was a member of the People for the Preservation and Development of Five Mile Prairie, Whirlaway Square Dance Club, Spokane Fly Fishers, Heart of Praise Prayer Group and Creating the Future.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine; a son, Greg Van Thiel of Wasilla, Alaska; two daughter, Rita Vrtis of Ventura, Calif., and Rachel Pettit of Edwall, Wash.; three brothers, William and Charles Van Thiel, both of Kenosha and Frank Van Thiel of Racine, Wis.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caritas Center or Hospice of Spokane.

Betty Taylor Spokane

Private family burial for Betty D. Taylor was held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Taylor, who died Monday, was a 32-year Spokane resident. She was 75.

She was born in Valley City, N.D., and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Herk; a son, Rod Taylor of Ontario, Calif.; a sister, Marie Mosley of California; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Lawrence White Spokane

Memorial service for Lawrence A. White, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Millwood Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. White, who was born in Tioga, W.Va., died July 12. He was 89.

He moved to Spokane in 1936.

In 1939 he married Erma Seehorn and then served in the Army during World War II.

He worked at Inland Empire Paper Co. mill as a paper maker.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Betty Leinweber of Spokane; a son, Jim White of Seattle; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Howard Lade Boise

Memorial service for Howard Franklin Lade, 82, will be Saturday at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Boise at 2 p.m. Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lade, who was born in Sumas, Wash., died Monday.

He grew up in Sedro Woolley, Wash., and attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City.

Mr. Lade served as an electrician with the Navy during World War II and then was self-employed.

He later worked in civil service for the Air Force and lived in Medical Lake for 21 years.

He moved to Boise two years ago.

Mr. Lade was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served 52 years as an elder.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; five daughters, Cherylene Yoast of Auburn, Wash., Valerie Gray of Maine, Susanne Tovey and Dale Cucumano, both of Boise, and Wendy Jacobson of California; a sister, Dorothy Magnuson of Sedro Woolley; two brothers, Richard Lade of Missouri and Don Lade of Concrete, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.
