Brian Van Vleet Completes Six-Week Spark Internship
A local high school student recently completed a six-week internship through the University of Idaho’s SPARK (Student Program for Aeronautics Resources for Knowledge) Youth Internship program.
Brian Van Vleet, of Pinehurst, who is a ninth grader at Kellogg Middle School, interned with UI Industrial Technology Education Division. He is the son of Brian Van Vleet Sr.
The internship, funded by NASA’s Learning Technologies Program, is designed to offer high school students, especially Native Americans, an opportunity to participate in real-world experiences in an aeronautics-related field. This year’s internship partners were: Horizon Air, Interstate Aviation and the UI Industrial Technology Education Division’s Robotics Laboratory. This is the second year these internships have been offered on the UI campus. Students in the program are participating in UI’s Upward Bound program.
Steven Johnsen, a Moscow resident and University of Idaho senior majoring in molecular biology/biochemistry, was the 1997-98 recipient of the Idaho Academy of Science Scholarship.
The Idaho Academy of Science, organized in 1958 to further the cause of science and education in Idaho, has supported UI students from the state who are majoring in the sciences or science-related careers since 1991.
Navy Ensign Julian B. Duffey, who graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1995 from the University of Idaho in Moscow, has received commission as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.
