Obituaries

Louis Mallavia Moscow, Idaho

Service for Louis Pascal Mallavia, 61, will be at 11 a.m. today at Moscow Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, First Ward Chapel. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shoshone (Idaho) Cemetery. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mallavia, who was born in Shoshone, died Friday.

He graduated from Shoshone High School in 1955 and earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology from Idaho State University in 1959.

Mr. Mallavia then earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Kansas in 1965 and worked as a teacher and researcher at Washington State University.

He taught at WSU for 33 years and was chairman of the microbiology department.

Mr. Mallavia was known nationally for his research work.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Susie; three sons, Wayne Mallavia of Mississippi, Donald Mallavia of Spokane and David Mallavia of Pocatello, Idaho; a daughter, Connie Mallavia of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Iver Engebretson Spokane

Visitation for Iver T. Engebretson, 85, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Engebretson, who died Friday, was born in Taylor, N.D.

He served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a furnace operator at Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood rolling mill. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Engebretson was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a 48-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include his wife Lucille; a son, Nels Engebretson of Spokane; two daughters, Eldora Engebretson of Peoria, Ariz., and ShirleyAnn Wilson of Conway, Mo.; two brothers, Clair Engebretson of Mankato, Minn., and Vern Engebretson of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Ruby Peterson of Smelterville, Idaho; and three grandchildren.

Edna Bradley Kennewick

Funeral for Edna O. Bradley, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bradley, who was born in Green Forest, Ark., died Wednesday.

She lived in Miami and Pasco before moving to to Spokane, where she worked at Fairchild Air Force Base.

She moved to Kennewick two years ago.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pillars and First Assembly of God Church in Spokane.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

Survivors include two nieces, Elaine LaFon of Pasco and Barbara Ward of Kennewick.

Teresa (Hitzel) Finch Pullman

Graveside service for Teresa Gay (Hitzel) Finch, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Finch, who was born in Spearfish, S.D., died Thursday.

She graduated from Spearfish High School and in 1931 married William Finch.

They moved to the Metaline Falls-Ione, Wash., area in 1937 and in 1945 they moved to Pullman, where they owned Finch’s Market from 1956 to 1986.

Her husband died in 1993.

Survivors include three sons, Howard and Gerald Finch of Pullman, and Benny Finch of Palouse, Wash.; six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Julius Lund Spokane

Visitation for Julius Marshall Lund, 75, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Lund, who was born in Aiken, Minn., died Friday. He was a 70-year Spokane resident.

He served in the Army during World War II and in 1947 he married his wife, Nora.

Mr. Lund worked in construction as a detail wood craftsman and finish carpenter.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marcia Reininger of Lewiston; a son, Larry Lund of Spokane; a brother Manford Lund; a sister, Adeline; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Frances Harding Hauser Lake, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Frances Marie Harding, 79, is planned for 8 a.m. today at Mount St. Michael Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery near Mount St. Michael. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harding, who was born in Toledo, Ohio, died Saturday.

In 1946, she married George Harding, Jr.

They moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1972 and later moved to Hauser Lake.

Mrs. Harding was a homemaker and a member of Mount St. Michael Parish and the Third Order of Mary Immaculate Queen.

Her husband died in 1989.

Survivors include five daughters, Jane Miller and Kathy Rocco, both of Spokane, Judianne Lindekugel of Kent, Wash., Kay Chirgott of Toledo, Ohio, and Robin Seals of Temperance, Mich.; a son, Don Harding of Spokane; a sister, Irene Fuire of Spokane; 33 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Virginia Weible Spokane

Memorial service for Virginia E. Weible, 72, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Private burial was at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Weible, who born in Wallace, Idaho, died Friday.

She moved to Spokane in 1940 and for many years owned Appleway Florist.

Mrs. Weible was a member of the Quota Club, the Northwest Florist Association and Lady Gyros.

Her first husband, Bob Lewis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Harvey; a daughter, Sue Bartleson of Spokane; three sons, Bobbie, Gary and Monty Lewis, all of Spokane, a stepdaughter, Pennie Weible; two stepsons, Gary and Ron Weible; two sisters, Aileen Buck and Patty Simpson; one brother, Dick Craine Jr.; and 18 grandchildren.

Earnest Johnson Chattaroy

Private family service will be held for Earnest Norman Johnson. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Burke, Idaho, died Friday. He was 81.

In 1938 he married Erville Oakes in Newport, Wash.

He served as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in England, Europe, and during the Korean War. He received a Purple Heart and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Mr. Johnson was later employed with the C.I.T. Corp. in Spokane dealing in heavy equipment sales and leasing. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1474.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Johnson of Chattaroy; a daughter, Judith Warren of Maple Valley, Wash.; a brother, Walter Johnson of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Shirley Rabb Spokane

Visitation for Shirley A. Rabb, 62, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home North. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Rabb, who died Friday, was born in Williston, N.D.

She graduated from Williston High School and married John Rabb in Casper, Wyo. They moved to Spokane in 1970.

Mrs. Raab worked for Keller Home Health Care for five years.

Her husband died in 1989.

Survivors include her companion, Roger Jenson; her mother, Margaret Knutson of Ray, N.D.; two sons, Steve Rabb of Enumclaw, Wash., and Jim Rabb of Mililani Town, Hawaii; two daughters, Sheri Hare of Spokane and Terri Delaney of Edmond, Okla.; three sisters, Carol Elsbernd of Bismarck, N.D., Pat Hill of Ray and Peg Drury of Houma, La.; a brother, Keith Kellar of Ray; and 11 grandchildren.

Russell Pohl Spokane

Visitation for Russell J. Pohl, 72, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Russell, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He was co-owner of Pohl Spring Works.

He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Valley Elks Lodge and the Lilac City Caravaner’s Club.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Ollie; and a sister, Arlene Delling of St. Louis.

George LaCroix Spokane

Vigil service for George G. LaCroix, 75, will be at 7 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. LaCroix, who was born in Rolette, N.D., died Saturday.

He was a farmer in North Dakota until he started to sell “Successful Farming” magazine, which brought him to Spokane 39 years ago.

Mr. LaCroix retired from the City of Spokane after 20 years as a mechanic.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge No. 2 and the Independent Order of Foresters.

His wife, Joan, died in 1992.

Survivors include four sons, Dennis, Terry and Peter LaCroix, all of Spokane, and Vital LaCroix of Sandy, Utah; four daughters, Luci Anderson, Patricia Thompson, Tami LaCroix and Mary Hitchcock, all of Spokane; two sisters, Angeline Harrison of North Dakota and Viola Espe of Nevada; six grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Donald ‘Bill’ Largent Kewa, Wash.

Funeral for Donald E. “Bill” Largent, 77, was Monday at Danekas Funeral Home in Colville, Wash. Graveside service followed at the Garfield (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Largent, who was born in Pullman, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Republic High School in 1939 and then worked on the family ranch.

In 1944 he married Phyllis Vermillion in Palouse, Wash.

He then worked in a meat market as well as on the family ranch until 1948, when they moved to Keller, Wash. He worked for the Ring Brothers’ Rodeos and for Pooler Logging.

In 1958 they moved to Kewa, Wash., where he owned a grocery store. He also continued to work on his ranch.

Mr. Largent was a member of the Cattlemen’s Association and the Quarter Horse and Paint Horse Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son, George Largent of Kettle Falls, Wash.; a daughter, Vicki Ross of Keller; a sister, Barbara Young of Council, Idaho; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Matthew Schekel Portland

Visitation for Matthew Justin Schekel, 27, will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman.

Mr. Schekel, who was born in Fort Collins, Colo., died May 27 from injuries related to a bicycle accident.

He moved to Pullman in 1971 with his family and graduated from Pullman High School in 1989.

He attended Western Washington University and Washington State University, where he studied theater and film. At the time of his death he was attending the Portland Film Institute.

While in Portland, he worked as a bicycle courier. He was also working for the Weiden and Kennedy Advertising Co. in the audio-visual department.

He is survived by his parents, Kurt and Marcia Schekel of Pullman; a brother, Zachary Schekel of Seattle; and his grandmother, Lorraine Schekel of Green Mountain Falls, Colo.

Elsie ‘Babe’ Farber Spokane

Graveside service for Elise C. “Babe” Farber, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Olympia, Mrs. Farber died Saturday.

She worked as a cook in several restaurants in the Spokane area before retiring in 1962.

She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and Hillyard Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Maurice.

Florence Johnson Spokane

Graveside service for Florence J. Johnson, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Overlee, N.D., died Saturday.

She worked as a sales clerk in a department store and was a 64-year resident of Spokane.

Her husband, Alvin, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by a sister, Luella Gladhart of Spokane.

Phyllis Saad Redmond, Wash.

Memorial service for Phyllis (Lindquist) Saad, 76, will be at noon Wednesday at the Sahalee Country Club in Redmond. Green’s Funeral Home in Bellevue, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Saad, a former Spokane resident, died May 27.

She was born in Red Lodge, Mont., and graduated from Carbon County (Mont.) High School and Whitman College, with a degree in economics.

In 1943, she married Jack Saad and they settled in Spokane where she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Saad moved to the Seattle area in 1976 and worked as the manager of the Corner Cupboard in University Village until its closing.

She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and Tri Delta Theta sorority.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Saad of Medina, Wash., and Jack Saad of Mercer Island, Wash.; a brother, Ray Lindquist of Florida; and two grandchildren.

Doris Stevens Spokane

Service for Doris (Miller) Stevens, 67, was May 10.

Mrs. Stevens, who died May 7, was born in Washington D.C.

She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in English literature.

She moved to Spokane in 1958 and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the YWCA, Friends of Manito and Rockwood Garden Club.

Survivors include two sons, Scott and Patrick Stevens, both of Spokane; two daughters, Susan and Tracy Stevens, both of San Francisco; and four grandchildren.

Ellen (Lilley) Terwilleger Spokane

No service will be held for Ellen Elsie (Lilley) Terwilleger. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Terwilleger, who was born near Kahlotus, Wash., died Wednesday. She was 73.

She graduated from high school in Pasco and in 1945 married Dale Beckner.

Mrs. Terwilleger lived in Washtucna, Wash., with her husband until his death in 1959.

In 1961, she married Terry Terwilleger, who also preceded her in death.

She moved to Spokane 38 years ago.

Mrs. Terwilleger worked in many types of jobs, from cooking for harvest crews, as a waitress, a bookkeeper for insurance companies, and working for Macco Auto Painting. She spent the last several years working at the Spokane Humane Society, from which she retired in 1993.

Survivors include three sons, Terry, Larry and Jerry Beckner, all of Washtucna; two brothers, James Henry Lilley and William Lilley; a sister, Hattie McGougan; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John Rose Spokane

Funeral for John A. Rose, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Rose, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He was a farmer for many years in the Four Mound and Nine Mile Falls areas and was one of the original members of the Four Mound Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carolyn; a daughter, Joanie Flynn of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Margaret Wherry Spokane

Family service for Margaret K. Wherry, 93, was Monday. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Wherry, who died Friday, was born in Otter Tail, Minn.

She moved to Deary, Idaho, with her family as a child. She moved to Spokane in the 1950s.

Mrs. Wherry was a homemaker and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Ralph, died in 1980.

Survivors include a sister, Edna Cheyrion of Spokane; and a brother, Charles Schwartz of Outlook, Wash.
