Coaches, Teammates Will Attend Bender Services

Funeral services for Leon Bender, the former Washington State University football player who died late last week, will be held Saturday in San Diego.

The service has been scheduled for 10 a.m. in Northpark Church, 4101 University Ave.

WSU head coach Mike Price and five assistants plan to attend. Teammates Miguel Meriwether, Love Jefferson, Kenny Moore, Chris Jackson and Shad Hinchen will act as pallbearers for Bender, an All-American defensive lineman who was taken by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the recent National Football League draft.

Baseball draft

Former North Central High School outfielder Justin Williams, fresh from a bang-up freshman season at Columbia Basin College, and Community Colleges of Spokane outfielder Jerymane Beasley have joined the list of area players selected in the free-agent draft.

Williams, who set school records in home runs (14), runs batted in (57), runs (59) and total bases (111) while batting .406 for CBC, was chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 37th round. Williams does not plan to sign immediately, but the Blue Jays will retain his rights under the draft-and-follow rules.

San Diego picked Beasley, who is from Kennewick, in the 24th round.
