Bette Chamberlain Spokane

Memorial service for Bette V. Chamberlain, 75, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Heritage Congregational Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Chamberlain, who was born in Mitchell, S.D., died Tuesday.

She lived in Portland before moving to Spokane in 1954 and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 31 years before retiring in 1985.

She was the varsity bowling coach for Lewis and Clark High School, and coached junior bowlers at Silver Lanes for 15 years.

Mrs. Chamberlain was a member of the Daughters of the Nile Adelphi and Magnolia Chapters, the Order of Eastern Star, the International Order of Rainbow of Girls, the Women of the Moose Spokane Chapter No. 74, Heritage Congregational Church, the Presbyterian Women and was a past queen of the El Karnak Temple.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Ralph; two sons, John Chamberlain of Spokane and Billy King of Seattle; a daughter, Cheryl Anderson of Tacoma; a brother, Carroll Marshall of Fresno, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Joel Carroll Spokane

Funeral for Joel Elliot Carroll, 26, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carroll, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

He graduated from Central Valley High School and was vice president of Systems Amusement, Inc.

Mr. Carroll was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 3433.

He is survived by his wife Stacy; a son, Zachary, and a daughter, Madison; his father and stepmother, Robert and Linda Carroll of Newman Lake; his mother, Marge Carroll of Spokane; three brothers, Robert Carroll of Spokane, Jeff Moritz of Loon Lake, Wash., and Troy Hardy of Colbert; three sisters, Vicki Downey of Elk, Kari Carroll of Veradale and Kristy Manum of Seattle; and his grandparents, Earl and Ann Moritz of Ephrata, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

Jane Gackler Spokane

Memorial service for Jane Gackler, 49, was Thursday at the Unitarian Church.

Ms. Gackler, who was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., died Tuesday of cancer.

She grew up in Caledonia, Mich., and graduated from Central Michigan University.

Ms. Gackler worked for the Forest Service in Arizona and in the Okanogan area for 10 years before moving to Spokane about 15 years ago, where she worked as a librarian for the Spokane Public Library.

Survivors include her partner, Rosmond Langberg of Spokane; a sister, Suann Hewlett and two brothers, John and Ken Gackler, all of Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Women’s Drop-in Center in Spokane.

Norman Anderson Reardan, Wash.

Visitation for Norman A. Anderson, 93, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Reardan Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Reardan Cemetery.

Mr. Anderson, who died Monday, was born in Waukon, Wash.

He graduated from Reardan High School.

In 1930, he married Doris Lane.

Mr. Anderson lived and farmed near Reardan.

He was on the El Katif Shrine Directors Staff and was associated with the Calliope for 15 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Waukon Grange, Reardan Cemetery Board, Reardan Lions Club and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a charter member and director of Lincoln Mutual No. 2 in Reardan.

His wife died in 1990.

Mr. Anderson is survived by a foster son, Herman Scholer of Reardan; and a sister, Lavina Swanson of Medical Lake.

Ellen Shanks Spokane

Funeral Mass for Ellen C. Shanks, 88, will be at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shanks, who was born in Sprague, Wash., died Monday.

She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1928 and from Holy Names Normal School in 1930, receiving her certificate in teaching.

She moved to Spokane in 1954, where she was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and Morning Star Boys Ranch Auxiliary.

Her husband John died in 1993.

She is survived by a cousin, Katherine McShanie of Illinois.

Memorial contributions may be made to Morning Star Boys Ranch or to Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Patricia Gray Spokane

Rosary for Patricia Cameron Gray, 69, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Memorial Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gray, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She graduated from North Central High School and Eastern Washington University with a teaching degree.

Mrs. Gray was a homemaker, and a member of St. Frances of Assisi Parish.

Survivors include two sons, John and Joe Gray, and a daughter, Pauline Dingman, of Spokane; her parents, Don and Helen Fraser and a sister, Donna Wyatt, also of Spokane; a brother, Mike Fraser of Chico, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Owen Vivion Spokane

Memorial service for Owen H. Vivion, 79, was May 24. Mr. Vivion, who was born in Sutter, Calif., died May 22.

He worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service as a regional manager and retired in 1983.

Mr. Vivion, who had lived in Spokane for 15 years, was a member of the Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; two sons, Ronald Vivion of Edmonds, Wash., and Michael Vivion of Fairbanks, Alaska; four stepdaughters, Gerilyn Calettie of Fountain Valley, Calif., Dee Kimmerle of Billings, Mont., Janelle Steinberg of Plentywood, Mont., and Debbie Madsen of Coeur d’Alene; and two grandchildren.

Helen Pool Spokane

Visitation for Helen Estelle Pool, 88, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Pool died Tuesday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and in 1928, married Gerald Pool and they moved to Honolulu in 1955. They returned to Spokane in 1988.

Mrs. Pool was a homemaker and a member of Manito Garden Club, Hutton Mothers Singers, the American Contract Bridge League and Manito United Methodist Church.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean McGee of Spokane; two sons, Edward Pool of Spokane and Richard Pool of Lafayette, Calif.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Reimer Jr. Spokane

Funeral for Robert R. Reimer Jr., 42, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Reimer, a lifetime Spokane resident, died May 29.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Peltier of Spokane; and a brother, Greg Reimer also of Spokane.

Helen (Manchester) Franz Lind, Wash.

Memorial service for Helen E. (Manchester) Franz, 67, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Menno Mennonite Church 18 miles west of Ritzville. The church is located off Interstate 90 at the Lind/Odessa exit; follow frontage road to Damon Road. Private burial will follow at the Menno Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Franz, who was born in Snohomish, Wash., died Tuesday.

She graduated from Colfax (Wash.) High School and married Earl Franz.

In 1950 they moved to Ruff, Wash., and in 1956 they moved to Spokane. In 1958 they moved to their farm south of Lind.

Mrs. Franz worked for Lamb Weston for six years and for B and H Apparel for 15 years as a sales clerk.

She was a member of the Menno Mennonite Church.

Survivors include her husband Earl; three daughters, Yvonne Redelfs of Fort Worth, Texas, Gail Hudson and Jeanette Filan, both of Kennewick; three sisters, Alice Allenbach and Polly Anderson, both of Colfax and Pearl Broyles of Clarkston, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

Sonia Anderson Spokane

Memorial service for Sonia L. Anderson, 61, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Albertson, Ga., died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Hillyard VFW Post 1474. She had lived in Spokane since 1969.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gary; four sons, Terry, Arnold, Robbie and Mark Anderson, and two daughters, Judy Burns and Donna Lands, all of Spokane; three brothers, Winfred Robinson of Georgia, and George and Frederick Robinson, both of South Carolina; and 15 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Frances ‘Carol’ (Peterson) Halligan Spokane

Funeral for Frances “Carol” (Peterson) Halligan, 52, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home North. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Ms. Halligan, who was born in Hillsboro, Ore., died May 28.

She lived in Casper and Lander, Wyo., and graduated from Lander High School in 1964. She lived in California before moving to the Spokane area 30 years ago.

Ms. Halligan worked as a cook in restaurants and nursing homes. She also drove a taxi for many years.

She is survived by a sister, Dora Breece of Los Angeles.
