Bailey Wins Sprint

From Staff Reports

World record holder Donovan Bailey won the 100 meters just days after announcing plans to retire following the 2000 Olympics.

The 30-year-old Canadian crossed the finish line at the Notturna outdoor meet in Milan, Italy, in 10.16 seconds, much slower than his world mark of 9.84.

Emma George of Australia claimed the women’s pole-vault event but failed to better her world mark of 15-feet, 0-3/4 inches. She cleared 14-5 to finish ahead of American Stacy Dragila, who vaulted 14-3-1/2.

Gwen Torrence, the world’s top-ranked women’s 100-meter runner in 1994 and 1995, probably will miss the event at the national championships and Goodwill Games because of an injured left leg.
