Chiefs Sign Rison
Andre Rison, who came to town with a troublemaker’s reputation but led his team in receiving and was voted its MVP, has signed a four-year extension that probably keeps him in Kansas City for the rest of his NFL career.
“I know a lot of people would have given up if they were in my shoes. A lot of people would have quit,” said the nine-year veteran, who caught 72 passes for 1,092 yards and was named to his fifth Pro Bowl.
The Chiefs also signed kick returner/running back Tamarick Vanover to a three-year extension.
Private investors in Southern California offered to raise $500 million for a football stadium in Irvine, Calif., provided they can act as the city’s exclusive negotiator for an NFL expansion franchise.
The offer is contingent upon the group buying and developing a proposed 440-acre parcel of government land at cost, even if Irvine isn’t awarded a team.
“To give exclusive rights to someone right now, I’m not sure if I’m comfortable with that. We need to be very cautious,” said Irvine mayor Christina Shea.
Shea proposed to the NFL that the stadium be built on a 440-acre site at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, which is scheduled to be closed next year, and the land sold to the City of Irvine.
She said the city hopes to buy the land below market value, break off 30 acres for a stadium, then sell the remaining 410 acres to a developer.
