Rescuers Hunt For Missing Guide
Rescue crews were searching Sunday for a guide who fell from a treacherous section of Mount McKinley, where two others died recently.
Chris Hooyman, 21, of Seattle, fell Saturday while descending from a higher camp. Two other guides found only Hooyman’s ice ax before high winds and snow forced them and other rescuers to turn back.
Hooyman works for Rainier Mountaineering Inc., one of the six guide services licensed to take climbers to the 20,320-foot summit.
Two climbers have died on McKinley since the main climbing season began in May.
A Canadian climber slid more than 1,000 feet from a ridge on the mountain May 24. A mountaineering ranger who tried to go to his aid fell the same day.
