Blatter To Head Fifa
Joseph “Sepp” Blatter, the candidate of soccer’s establishment, was elected president of the sport’s world governing body after promising “continuity” to a sport that has become a multimillion-dollar business and, starting Wednesday, will put on the biggest World Cup ever.
Blatter, a 62-year-old Swiss, who was supported by the 82-year-old incumbent, Joao Havelange, won when his opponent, Lennart Johansson, conceded after the first round of voting favored Blatter, 111-80. A second round would have been necessary because the two-thirds vote needed to elect a president on the first ballot was not achieved.
