Corrections
Kyle Rossiter may have been the first Spokane Chief to graduate from Ferris High School, but he wasn’t the first Chief to graduate from a Spokane high school.
Shane Maitland, who played on the 1991 Memorial Cup championship team, graduated from Shadle Park High School, said Julie Mayer, who was his billet at the time.
She and her husband Jack housed more than two dozen Chiefs players during six years as a billet, Mayer said. They once hosted five players at one time.
“Being a billet was a lot of fun, and we stayed in touch with a lot of them,” Mayer said. “They’re strewn all over Canada and in Germany.”
Maitland remained here. He is employed in Spokane, married a Shadle graduate and, in 1994, coached the Spokane Braves hockey team.
Track replay
Jonathan Parker, for two years one of Ferris’s top sprinters, was a member of the state runner-up 400 relay team.
His name was incorrectly replaced by alternate Blaine Craig in the official state results.
Parker was a state qualifier in the 100 and 200 as a junior and a regional participant in the sprints this season.
Although not qualifying for state in the open races this year, Parker nonetheless was integral to the school record-setting 42.09 state relay runners-up.
