Sampras Wins Warmup

Despite an easy two-set victory over Wayne Black at the Queen’s Club in London, Pete Sampras’ first warmup match for Wimbledon was anything but easy.

The top-seeded Sampras, playing his first match since losing in the second round of the French Open, won 6-2, 6-3 on a windy, chilly, wet day with autumn-like conditions making play treacherous.

Also Thursday, No. 14 Byron Black outlasted Jan-Michael Gambill 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

French Open champion Carlos Moya became the latest upset victim at the Weber Open in Halle, Germany. The Spaniard was ousted 7-5, 6-3 by Hendrik Dreekmann of Germany.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame museum in Newport, R.I., will reopen Sunday, 10 days after a fire.
