Call It Four Spices And An Italian Ham
So who will become the fifth Spice Girl now that Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell has left the British singing group because of “differences between us”?
Will it be Israel’s transsexual singing star, Dana International, who told a Jerusalem newspaper she was invited to join? Probably not, as her manager says “from a musical standpoint, the Spice Girls are not really the direction Dana wants to go.”
Will it be Fat Spice, aka Al Bowker, the winner of (and only male entrant in) MTV’s Spice Girl audition contest? (He looks good in a dress, but that goatee has got to go.) Or how about superstar tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who joined the Spices for a rousing rendition of “Viva Forever” in their first post-Halliwell appearance at an Italian charity concert.
Loose talk
Posh Spice Victoria Adams, on Vanishing Spice Geri Halliwell: “If Geri walked through the door now we would all be like, ‘Hello’ … We all love each other and we all love Geri.”
And if they’re really looking for ‘girls’ …
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen turn 12 today.
Sounds like she’s returning to her roots
Now that we’ve just gotten used to Sinead O’Connor with hair, the controversial Irish singer surprised the crowd by showing up at a London music festival with her shaved-head look of old, performing many of the early songs that made her famous.
Like they say, a Rod is as good as a drink
Rod Stewart has apologized to British soccer fans for an all-night bender with soccer star Paul Gascoigne that led to Gascoigne being left off the nation’s World Cup team amid questions about his commitment and fitness. In a letter to the Sun newspaper, Stewart wrote: “I wish we had never run into each other that night. Had I known the outcome, I would have said, ‘No drink for you tonight, Paul.’ But try telling Paul Gascoigne he can’t have a drink.”
Taxes? They’re trying to beat the burden
The Rolling Stones postponed the British leg of their world tour until next year in the wake of complicated new tax laws that would have cost them an extra $20 million had the shows gone on this year. “I was tempted to bite the bullet, but I am not the only one affected,” Mick Jagger said. “A Rolling Stones world tour is a two-year project and there are over 200 people involved.”
Actually, you can’t do much worse than Rotten
Former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) will host a new weekly half-hour magazine show for the VH1 cable music network. Lydon said the show will have “no strict format. If it takes off the way I’d like, each episode will be completely different. Everything is possible except mediocrity.”
