Paddle A Classic

Spokane River Canoe Classic

Paddlers of all abilities need to plan ahead for the Spokane River Canoe Classic, set for July 18.

After July 6, the $15 per person registration fee increases by $10.

The annual event, which nearly died this year until it was rescued with sponsorship from Mountain Gear, will be much less nerve-wracking at it’s new July date.

In previous years, the mid-June date often put paddlers on the river during high, cold runoff. During last year’s floods, event organizers from the Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club, faced with canceling, moved the event to Liberty Lake.

The classic is geared to recreational canoeists and kayakers as well as to marathon athletes. Paddlers have two choices: a 7 mile float from Corbin Park in Post Falls to Harvard Road, or continue downstream to complete the 13-mile route to Plante’s Ferry Park.

T-shirts and prizes are being offered. Info: Mountain Gear, 325-9000.
