Ten years ago: Leaders of the world’s seven biggest industrial democracies began arriving in Toronto for their annual economic summit, with the host, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, forecasting progress on dismantling farm subsidies and alleviating Third World debt.

Five years ago: U.N. forces in Somalia searched in vain for warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. President Clinton told a news conference his economic package was making “remarkable progress.”

One year ago: Mir Aimal Kasi, suspected in the shooting deaths of two CIA employees outside agency headquarters in January 1993, was brought to Fairfax, Va., to face trial after being arrested in Pakistan. He was later convicted and sentenced to death.
