And Now, Reason No. 4: He Had No Green Card
One of the most powerful aspects of “The X-Files” has been its look. For a television show, it’s always had a genuinely creepy feel.
Must be those Vancouver locations.
Yet authenticity, or the lack of it, is at least one of the reasons why Rob Bowman, a veteran director of several episodes who was chosen to direct the just-opened movie, did not show the alien creatures too soon.
Actually, he had three reasons.
“No. 1, I didn’t have an alien that was a groundbreaker,” he says. “No. 2, it’s not as scary if you see it. And No. 3, it was a guy in a rubber suit….”
The problems: There were folds in the costume’s arms, the seat sagged and the feet were, Bowman said, “so stupid-looking… (that) I made him wear tennis shoes.”
Loose talk
Vice President Al Gore on the NBA finals (in the Chicago Tribune): “I tell you that Michael Jackson is unbelievable, isn’t he? He’s just unbelievable.”
From dusk ‘til dawn, she’s a natural-born actress
Juliette Lewis turns 25.
They did, however, mention the Queen Mum’s new hip
The British tabloids got all over Princess Anne for showing up at a recent public function wearing a 17-year-old hat. Yet they paid little attention to the Queen Mother, who attended the Royal Ascot races on Wednesday carrying a 22-year-old umbrella.
Where were you when you heard about Dodi and Di?
If you happen to be in England next month, you might want to attend the function being organized by royal-watcher James Roose-Evans. Billed as a “Diana Weekend,” its purpose is to help those still grieving the loss of Princess Diana. Says Roose-Evans, “They can share their feelings with others who feel the same about the princess.” Cost is $100.
The name is Trump, you know, not chump
Marla Maples Trump is hoping to break the prenuptial agreement that she made with her estranged hubby Donald Trump. More power to her, but it doesn’t look good. “It’s just totally iron clad,” Trump said before entering court on Thursday. Echoed his attorney, “When Marla loses this, she’s going to be responsible for all these (attorney’s) fees.”
In her free time, she crochets and likes walks on the beach
Jennifer Jason Leigh, one of Hollywood’s most daring actresses, won’t get over her choice of roles anytime soon. Leigh, who will replace Tony Award-winning Natasha Richardson in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret,” was described in an Associated Press story as having played a “panorama of prostitutes, psychos, phone-sex suppliers and junkies.”
Once again, Krusty the Klown gets dissed by history
Look for the cast of “The Simpsons” - Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie - to be inducted into Hollywood’s Walk of Fame next year. Others to be similarly honored include Alex Trebek, Wesley Snipes, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dennis Franz, Samuel Jackson and Reba McEntire.
