Learn Wild Edibles On Nature Hikes
Three guided hikes are scheduled next month to introduce people to wild edibles from the region’s forests.
Two of the outings are sponsored by the Colville National Forest, one by the Colville Confederated Tribes.
The hikes, guided by experts, are scheduled as follows:
July 18, Sherman Creek: Easy 2-mile walk with a forester, with emphasis on identifying edible berries. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Kettle Falls Ranger Station. Info: (509) 684-7000.
July 19, cultural plants of the Colville Indian Reservation: Easy walk with a tribal ecologist to look at forested plants important to the culture of the Colville Tribes. Learn about the plants and how they are gathered, prepared and used by local Native Americans. Meet at 9 a.m. at Steem Uss Spaoos Restaurant on Main Street in Inchelium, Wash.. Limit 20 people. July 25, Swan Lake: Easy walk with a wildlife biologist to sample fruits of the forest. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Swan Lake Campground kitchen. Info: (509) 775-3305.
