Memorial Planned For Slain Isp Officer Suspect In Shooting Still In Fair Condition
A memorial service honoring slain Idaho State Police officer Linda Huff is planned for later this month, authorities announced Saturday.
The service will be held at Lake City High School on June 29 at 2 p.m. It is open to the public.
Huff, 33, died Wednesday night during a gunbattle outside the ISP’s northern region headquarters building on Prairie Avenue. Investigators have said she was shot at least 10 times, including once in the head.
Scott Yager, the suspected gunman, was shot twice. He remained in fair condition Saturday at Kootenai Medical Center under police guard.
Prosecutors have charged Yager, 34, with first-degree murder. The Rathdrum man could face the death penalty if convicted.
Huff, born in Ontario, Ore., grew up in Ironside where she attended Burnt River High School. She was a standout in volleyball, basketball and rodeo events, twice making it to the national junior rodeo finals.
Huff took a job as a Payette County, Idaho, dispatcher in 1990 after working in the assessor’s office for three years. In 1992, she began working as a patrol officer for the Payette County Sheriff’s Department and was promoted to sergeant in 1996.
She met her husband, Chad, an ISP corporal also assigned to Coeur d’Alene, while working for Payette County. The couple married in November 1993.
In February 1997, they became the first husband-wife team to make it through the Idaho State Police academy together.
She is survived by her sons, Clinton, 10, and Zachary, 4; a daughter, Rena, 5; parents Barbara and Ed Laughlin; and a brother and a sister.
