Obituaries

Louise Boyd Pullman

Visitation for Louise Vivian Boyd, 62, will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Burial will follow at Pullman City Cemetery.

Mrs. Boyd, who was born in Flagstaff, Ariz., died Monday of cancer.

Her family moved to the Pullman area in 1943 and she graduated from Pullman High School.

In 1953 she married Robert Boyd in Pullman and they left the Pullman area in 1970 and lived briefly in Redmond, Ore., Yakima and Othello, Wash.

They returned to Pullman in 1978 and she worked for Ivan Sayles, who later consolidated with Downen Insurance to become AIA Insurance in Pullman. She retired in 1997.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Robert Boyd Jr. of Redmond, William Boyd of Pullman and David Boyd of University Place, Wash.; a daughter, Kimberly Boyd of Yakima; three brothers, Robert Berry of Escondido, Calif., William Berry of Fair Oaks, Calif., and James Berry of Kent, Wash.; a sister, Maxine Baldwin of Lees Summit, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

James Kirkland Spokane

Visitation for James A. Kirkland, 84, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Kirkland, who was born in Kellogg, died Tuesday.

In 1936 he married Dora Mauro in Spokane.

He worked for various produce wholesalers and in 1953 purchased a produce business. He also owned Jim Kirkland Produce for 25 years, before retiring in 1977.

Mr. Kirkland was a member of the Brotherhood of Friends Club, Teamsters Local No. 690 and St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary Kirkland of Encinitas, Calif., and James Kirkland of Seattle; three sisters, Lucille Marchand of Spokane, Marian Rasmussen of El Cerrito, Calif., and Harriet Maier of Glendora, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kim Haight Veradale

Visitation for Kim M. Haight, 44, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Haight, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She worked as an industrial electrician for Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 25 years.

Mrs. Haight was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 338.

Survivors include a stepson, Jeff Pearson of Spokane; two daughters, Tamara and Janelle Haight, both of Veradale; two stepdaughters, Tina Frickie of Rockford and Cindy Haight of Spokane; her parents, Phyllis and Jack Walrath of Post Falls; and two sisters, Karen Merritt of Pullman and Jackie Fitting of Spokane.

Jonathan Spence Spokane

Memorial service for Jonathan L. Spence, 35, will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Ramada Inn, Spokane International Airport. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spence, who was born in Bend, Ore., died Monday.

He graduated in 1980 from Liberty High School in Spangle and from the University of Washington in 1985.

In 1988 he married Darla Nelson and worked as an operations manager for the Bank of America from 1989 until his death.

Mr. Spence was a member of the Zeta Psi and was a 30-year resident of the area.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Alaina Spence of Spokane; his parents, Ken and Lou Spence of Spokane; and three brothers, David Spence of Spokane, Mark Spence of Cheney and Jason Spence of Hillsboro, Ore.

William Dubois Spokane

Memorial service for William G. Dubois, 42, is planned for 6:30 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Dubois, a 20-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He was born in Beaufort, S.C., and worked as a welder, most recently at Alloy Trailers.

Mr. Dubois was a member of the Inland Wildlife Council and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Helen Dubois of Spokane; and a sister, Maureen Palmer.

Irene Smick Endicott, Wash.

Burial for Irene Smick is planned for 10 a.m. today at Endicott Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime resident of Endicott, Mrs. Smick died Monday. She was 97.

In 1921 she married Philip Smick in Endicott. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Smick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and ladies circle.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Dale Smick of Endicott; two sisters, Amelia DeLong of Spokane and Ruth Lust of Auburn, Wash.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marshall Peterson Moyie Springs, Idaho

Funeral for Marshall T. “Marty” Peterson, 28, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Peterson, who was born in Spokane, drowned in the Moyie River in Boundary County, Idaho, on Saturday.

He worked as a welder in various jobs on construction sites, and had moved to Moyie Springs more than a year ago.

His fiancee, Merri Elliston, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, LuAnna; his parents, Wayne and Bernadine Peterson of Spokane; two brothers, Mitchell and Matthew Peterson, and two sisters, Melissa and Jessica Peterson, all of Spokane.

Amelia Maxfield Spokane

Memorial service for Amelia Maxfield, 79, was Tuesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218.

Mrs. Maxfield, who died Sunday, was born in Walla Walla.

She graduated from Rogers High School and worked for many years for Allied Janitorial Company at the Spokane County Courthouse.

Mrs. Maxfield was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218.

Her first husband, Leonard Sweet, and her second husband, John Maxfield, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard Sweet and Jason Maxfield; four daughters, Linda Anderson, Diane Lants, Patty Maxfield and Sandy Boren; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Doris Pelloux Spokane

Funeral for Doris A. Pelloux, 83, was Tuesday at Fairmount Memorial Park Sunset Chapel.

Mrs. Pelloux, a 30-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

She was born in Calistoga, Calif., and graduated from high school in 1932 in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Mrs. Pelloux worked as a bank teller for several years in Santa Rosa, and in 1939 married Robert Pelloux.

She moved to Spokane in 1967 from Seattle where she had lived for nine years.

Her husband died in 1979.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Lacy of Spokane, Sister Bonnie Pelloux of Kent, Wash., and Barbara Asaka of Seattle; a son, William Pelloux of Nine Mile Falls; and two grandchildren.

Norman Rudy Spokane

Memorial service for Norman D. Rudy, 82, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the Eagles Lodge on Francis Avenue. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rudy, who died Monday, was a 35-year Spoakne resident.

He was born in Rockford, Ohio, and worked as a carpenter in the housing industry.

Mr. Rudy was a member of the Carpenters Union Local No. 605, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and Eagles Lodge No. 2.

Survivors include special friend, June Ward of Spokane; a brother, Glen Rudy of Fernwood, Idaho; and a sister, Ramona Morris of Poland, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Lodge.

Aubrey Lynch Spokane

Memorial service for Aubrey J. Lynch, 91, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Lynch, who was born in Ewan, Wash., died Sunday.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked as an agricultural rancher.

Mr. Lynch moved to Spokane eight years ago.

He is survived by two sons, Lloyd and Robert Lynch, both of Spokane; a brother, Darrell Lynch of St. John, Wash.; a sister, Zae Denton of St. John; and four grandchildren.

Margaret Nichols Eugene, Ore.

Memorial service for Margaret Nichols, superintendent of the Eugene School District, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at First Covenant Church in Spokane. A second memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church in Eugene. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nichols, who was born in Breckenridge, Minn., died Sunday from complications related to cancer. She was 59.

She was raised in Spokane and graduated in 1956 from North Central High School. She graduated in 1960 from Whitworth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and social sciences.

Mrs. Nichols taught in elementary schools in Seattle, Tacoma and Eugene before earning her master’s degree in special education and educational psychology at the University of Oregon. She also served as an administrator in the Lincoln County School District in Newport, Ore.

In 1969 she married Dean Nichols in Toledo, Ore.

At the Eugene School District she served as director of educational services and as the assistant to the superintendent before taking the superintendency in 1984. She had recently taken a medical leave.

She received a doctorate degree of philosophy in 1983 from the University of Oregon.

Mrs. Nichols was named Oregon Superintendent of the Year in 1997 and was named Eugene’s First Citizen in 1998.

Survivors include her husband; a brother, Jim Ewell of Eugene; a sister, Sharon Williams, and her parents, Alfred and Winifred Ewell, all of Spokane.

Nellie King Spokane

Graveside service for Nellie R. King, 94, will be held at a later date in Chelan, Wash. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King, an 18-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She was born in Menomonie, Wis., and graduated from high school there.

Mrs. King was a homemaker, and a member of Mountain View Church of the Nazarene.

Her husband of 45 years, William King, died in 1975.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Moore of Auburn, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Ovace Delp Spokane

Service for Ovace R. Delp, 82, will be held at a later date in Lewiston. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Delp, who was born in Pilger, Neb., died Friday.

He served in the Army during World War II and worked as a roofer.

Mr. Delp had lived in Spokane for the past 35 years.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry of Lewiston and Charlie of Battle Ground, Wash.; and two sisters, Shirley of Lewiston and Mary.

Marjorie Cameron Colville, Wash.

Memorial service for Marjorie J. Cameron, 59, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville.

Born in Okanogan, Wash., Mrs. Cameron died Tuesday.

She moved to Tacoma with her family at an early age and returned to Okanogan in 1947.

In 1955 she married Roy Cameron in Colville and they moved to the Gifford, Wash., area, where they logged until moving back to Colville in 1966.

Mrs. Cameron worked for Buena Vista and Pinewood Terrace Nursing Homes as a cook, nurses aide and in housekeeping.

She and her husband owned and operated the Manderville Motel for eight years and later farmed.

Her husband died in February.

Survivors include a daughter, Jenny Heater of Colville; two sisters, Linda Waggoner and Barbara Sherrodd, both of Arden, Wash.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Erna Fleming Spokane

Memorial service for Erna Marie Fleming, 88, is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church. Private Burial was held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fleming, who was born in Sharon, died June 2.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and worked as a portrait photographer in Spokane.

After her marriage to Edward Fleming, they lived in Anchorage, Alaska, New York and Washington, D.C.

Her husband died in 1954 and she worked as a secretary at Georgetown University.

Mrs. Fleming moved back to Spokane after her retirement in 1976 and was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Dostert of Spokane.

Merle Hills Post Falls

Memorial service for Merle Russel Hills, 88, will be Friday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Hills, who was born in Wisconsin, died Friday.

He grew up and attended school in Wisconsin and moved to Tensed, Idaho, in the 1930s.

Mr. Hills drove a logging truck and then moved to St. Maries in 1941 and began a career as a mechanic with Frazier Chevrolet, now Chase Chevrolet.

Mr. Hills then worked as a truck driver for Spokane-St. Maries Auto Freight Co., and moved to Post Falls in 1981.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Grace and Hazel.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; two daughters, Geri Enyert of Nevada and Joyce Griffin of Coeur d’Alene; two stepsons, Ken Sturgis of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Jerry Sturgis of Worley, Idaho; two brothers, George Hills of Spokane and Donald Hills of New Hampshire; a sister, Myrtle Crowell of California; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Allen Ogdon Cheney

Memorial service for Allen “Al” Ogdon, former Cheney mayor, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Showalter Hall Auditorium on the Eastern Washington University Campus. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ogdon, who was born in Snoqualamie Falls, Wash., died Sunday in a rafting accident on the Arkansas River in Colorado. He was 66.

He graduated from Grandview (Wash.) High School and later received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Washington University.

Mr. Ogdon coached all sports at Manson (Wash.) High School and Kennewick High School and later became dean of students at Eastern Washington University. He retired after 30 years in 1991 as dean of students emeritus.

He served 14 years as a city councilman for the city of Cheney and was mayor of Cheney from 1986 to 1997. During that time he served as the president of the Association of Washington Cities, as an advisory board member for the Municipal Research Center, chaired the Spokane Regional Transportation Council, was a member of the Public Works Trust Board, chaired the Transportation Improvement Board and the Spokane Transit Authority, and served as a chair for the Spokane Regional Solid Waste Liaison Board.

Mr. Ogdon was also actively involved in the Cheney Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, the EWU Alumni Board of Directors, the EWU Eagle Athletic Association and the Washington State Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.

Survivors include his wife, Nada; four daughters, Julie Turman and Kim Quinnett, both of Spokane, Teri LeClair of Seattle and Patti Briggs of Omaha; two sons, Rick Ogdon of Seattle and Robert Ogdon of Littleton, Colo.; his father, Elmer Ogdon of the Tri-Cities; a sister, Merle Cook of Richland; and 16 grandchildren.

Merrill Vorhies Lynnwood, Wash.

Memorial service for Merrill “Sarge” Vorhies, 66, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bellevue (Wash.) Foursquare Church at the Factoria Mall. Purdy and Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home in Lynnwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vorhies, who was born in Pittsburg, Kan., died Saturday.

He retired after 30 years with the Air National Guard at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Mr. Vorhies had also worked for 14 years as a night manager with the Longhorn Barbecue in Airway Heights.

He moved to Seattle in 1990, and was a member of Bellevue Foursquare Church.

Survivors include his wife, Geri; five sons, Ric, Doug, Mike, Tim and Dennis Vorhies; a daughter, Kelli Haney; a stepdaughter, Gina Kelly; two sisters, Deannie Brew and Beverlee Parsons; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
