Kiesel New Rogers Track Coach

Steve Kiesel, Rogers’ boys cross country coach and an assistant in track and field since 1991, is the school’s new boys track coach.

Kiesel, who has been a substitute teacher in District 81 while coaching Pirates distance runners, was hired to teach physical education at Rogers.

Dave Hughes will take over Rogers’ golf program. The Rogers social studies teacher has been a Pirates football assistant for several years and last year was an assistant golf coach.

Rogers has filled four positions this month and must still hire a girls tennis coach.

Golf

Bill Porter of Quincy, Wash., repeated as champion of the Sunriver Oregon Open with a third-round, 1-over-par 73 Friday that left him at 4-under 212.

Porter, who earned $10,000 for the title, became the first back-to-back champion since Rick Acton in 1977-78.

Mike Barnett of Redmond, Wash., finished second, two strokes back. Tied for third, at 218, were Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan, Jeff Marsh and Acton. All earned $3,475. Gardner shot a 72, the second-best round of the day.

Other area finishers included Steve Prugh, Manito Golf and Country Club, tied for 14th, 222, $1,540; Michael Rorholm, Liberty Lake Golf Course, tied for 18th, 223, $1,295; and David Christenson, Indian Canyon GC, tied for 25th, 224, $1,050.

Kyle Kelly of Eastern Washington University qualified for the USGA Amateur Public Links tournament with a two-round total of 4-under 140 at Qualchan.

The tourney is July 13-18 in San Diego.

Baseball

Brad Valkenaar capped a three-run bottom of the seventh inning with a run-scoring single and the Bandits (5-5) defeated the North Stars 6-5 in Senior American Legion play at Jackson Field.

Brandon Florence, Mike Robinson and Brian Crowder, who homered in the second, went 2 for 3 for the Bandits. Cameron Bowers went 2 for 3 and Andy Bayne homered for the North Stars (3-5), who led 5-2 after 4-1/2 innings.

Soccer

The boys U-19 Spokane Falcons and boys U-13 Sandpoint Strikers lost in quarterfinals Thursday at the Snickers U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Falcons fell to Boise National 1-0. Corvallis (Ore.) United Fenner Reign defeated Sandpoint 4-2.

Southern California teams dominated Friday’s semifinals, capturing 12 of the 32 available berths in eight boys and girls age divisions.
