Margaret Haggin Dies
Environmental pioneer
Margaret Haggin, one of Spokane’s pioneering environmentalists, died last week after a long illness. She was 88.
Haggin, and her late husband, Morey, were the Inland Northwest’s foundation for environmental causes ranging from wilderness to population control for decades.
Margaret was born in Spokane, became a teacher, and was a charter member of the Spokane Audubon Society chapter.
While Morey mastered the microphone at public hearings on environmental issues, Margaret’s contribution was more subtle.
“She introduced so many kids to the wonders of nature right in her own yard,” said her son, Bart Haggin.
“She chaired Audubon’s environmental education committee for years and years,” said her daughter-in-law, Lindell Haggin.
The Haggin home on the Little Spokane River was regularly used as a nature research lab for children’s groups and for teachers.
A memorial service will be held today, 2 p.m., at that idyllic setting, 15418 N. Little Spokane River Drive.
