Oscars Telecast Set For A Sunday

Kirk Honeycutt The Hollywood Reporter

Oscar is getting a new day, a new time and a warm-up show.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that next year the Oscar telecast for the first time will take place on a Sunday at 5:30 PST. The Academy will also produce an arrivals show on ABC from 5 to 5:30 p.m. leading directly into the 71st annual Oscar presentation.

The telecast will originate from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on March 21. While previous shows began at 6 p.m., the earlier start gives the Academy a shot at much larger audiences in the Eastern United States.

The Academy did not announce plans for its preshow but said that along with shooting red-carpet arrivals, it will take advantage of access to areas unavailable to non-Academy preshows, such as lobbies, backstage and the auditorium.

Sunday is the only night Academy Awards have never been handed out.
