Rich Landers Outdoors Editor

A charity fund has found a gem among the literary trash produced nowadays for kids.

The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust has awarded the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation $215,000 to help supply fourth-graders in Idaho, Washington and Oregon with the foundation’s magazine for kids.

Wild Outdoor World, is a children’s nature magazine that deals with wildlife, habitat conservation and outdoor recreation.

The magazine already is distributed to fourth-graders in nine states, including Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming.

The Murdock Trust was created in 1975 by the will of the late Melvin J. Murdock, co-founder of Tektronix Inc. of Beaverton, Ore. Murdock lived in Vancouver, Wash.

The trust’s mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest by supporting education, RMEF officials said.

The elk foundation is an international nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat.

The major funding for RMEF is through the annual fund-raising banquets. Upcoming events in Idaho include:

March 7 in Lewiston, April 4 in Moscow, May 16 in Coeur d’Alene, June 20 in Sandpoint and July 11 in Wallace.
