U.S. Rep George R. Nethercutt has launched his second annual Students Taking Action and Responsibility (STAR) essay competitions. Winners will receive a free trip to Washington, D.C., where they will have the opportunity to present their solutions to national leaders.
Students must submit an essay of no more than 10 typed pages, double-spaced, on a new and original way to get area teens to volunteer in the community. The contest is open to students in grades 7 to 12. Essays must be received by March 27. For more information, call Nethercutt’s office at (202) 225-2006.

M1, Portsmouth, NH 03801, for a publication on how to get a piece of the more than 400,000 scholarship and grant sources available to students.
Wondering how prepared you are for college math? Washington State University’s math department has created an interactive Web site for high school students to find out if they are ready for college math. In addition, you can show off what you do know about math by entering the online math contest. Check out the site: www.sci.wsu.edu/math/HS
The Fairchild AFB Officers’ Wives’ Club is offering several scholarships to Spokane area high school students who are graduating this spring. Applicants must be a legal non-military dependent of a United States military member, must reside in the greater Spokane area and have at least a 3.2 grade point average.
