Jan-Michael Gambill of Colbert won his opening-round match in the $340,000 Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., defeating Mark Woodforde of Australia, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

Former No. 1 Boris Becker withdrew from the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic due to a back injury.

The withdrawal came hours before Becker’s first match in the United States in nearly two years.
