Bulldogs Manage 55-51 Win

The last time the Colfax girls made it to a state basketball tournament, Laura Widman was an eighth-grade manager in charge of folding the warm-up suits and collecting the balls after the players warmed up.

“This is a lot more fun,” said Widman after her Bulldogs picked up an opening-round 55-51 win over Dayton Wednesday in the Tacoma Dome. “The managers do some hard work, but it’s a little different being out on the floor.”

Widman, now a senior, and the Bulldogs (16-8) advanced to the quarterfinals against Toledo (21-3) at 5 p.m. today.

“We’re really young and nobody knows anything about us,” Widman said. “We’ve earned our way here and we’re going to prove it.”

While Widman brought what little experience she had to state, the Bulldogs went to their lone freshman when the game was on the line.

Becky VanTine sank four straight free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the victory. She needed to after Dayton had come back from a 10-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.

Darci Bruegman led the Dayton charge, scoring all six of her points in the final 5 minutes, 35 seconds. Jaci Heinrich and Jennifer Korsberg added 3-pointers in that stretch.

Korsberg missed a 3-pointer and Heinrich missed the putback with Dayton trailing 51-49 with just 18 seconds left.

The ball came out to VanTime, who was fouled with 16 seconds left. The freshman made both ends of a one-and-one to put Colfax up 53-49.

“It kept the lead at two possessions,” Colfax coach David Ebersole said. “They had the girls who could hit the 3s, so it was important that she hit those.”

VanTime made all six of her free throws.

Dayton’s Amy Alves cut Colfax’s lead to two points with a layin with 11 seconds left.

The inbounds pass come directly to VanTine, who again was fouled immediately. Again, she sank both ends of a one-and-one.

“Since I made my first two, I was a little more confident,” VanTine said of her second trip to the line.

VanTine’s contribution wasn’t limited to the final seconds. The freshman, who came in averaging just 4.1 points, scored six of her team-high points in the second quarter.
