The Pullman girls’ surprising run through the District 7 tournament finally hit a big speed bump Friday night in the championship game at Mt. Spokane High School.

The speed bump was second-ranked Lakeside.

Pullman’s Greyhounds (11-13) defeated sixth-ranked Riverside and ninth-ranked Newport to reach the championship game, but it was the Eagles (21-1) who came away with a convincing 62-35 victory.

With its 20th consecutive victory, Lakeside advances as the district’s top seed into the state tournament. Pullman will face Riverside at Mt. Spokane High today at 6. Winner will get the second seed, the loser third.

The Pullman boys advanced as the No. 1 seed after a 50-35 win over Chewelah.

“Clearly, beating Newport and Riverside was sending a message to us,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz. “We really focused on not overlooking this game.”

The Eagles jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. A 17-0 run to open the second gave Lakeside a 33-9 edge at the half. The Eagles benefited from 22 first-half Greyhounds turnovers.

Linsey Heebink led a balanced Lakeside attack with a game-high 16 points. Nikki Petticrew finished with 12 points, three steals and a block.

Christa Brossman had 13 points for Pullman. Melynnda Pedersen chipped in 12 points and three steals.
