Monroe Wins Main Event On Knockout
Carlos Monroe knocked out Billy Thompkins at 2:52 of the fourth round to deal Thompkins his first loss and win the main event on the professional boxing card at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino on Thursday night in Worley, Idaho.
It was the eighth knockout win for Monroe, who improved his record to 12-5-0. Thompkins is 13-1-1.
In the female feature, Sara Schmedding from Greenacres won a four-round unanimous decision over Robin Covino of Los Angeles.
Josh Imardiyi made quick work of his bout with Sam Hampton, winning by TKO at 1:57 of the first round.
In other bouts, Todd Foster dominated Reggie Strickland in a battle of junior middleweights, winning by unanimous decision in eight rounds; heavyweight David Bostice beat Renhard Jones at 1:57 of the first round on a TKO; and Josh Dempsey stopped LaMont Burgin on a TKO at 1:06 of the second in the undercard.
The next card will be April 1, featuring Spokane’s Frank Vasser, who will defend his IBA lightheavyweight title against Ed Dalton of Boise.
Baseball
North Idaho College gave new coach Paul Manzardo a win in his debut when the Cardinals pounded the visiting Lewis-Clark State College junior varsity 20-2 on Friday.
Al Bevacqua went 5 for 6 with six RBIs, Jason Bay drove in three runs and Nate Lynch was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and scored three runs to lead the Cardinals’ 24-hit attack.
Meanwhile, pitcher Shawn Boesch walked two and struck out two as he faced 20 batters before exiting after five innings.
Ohio State capitalized on windy conditions to hit three home runs and Buckeyes starting pitcher Eric Thompson threw a complete game in handing Washington State an 11-2 loss Friday morning in second round play of the UNLV Desert Classic at Earl E. Wilson Field in Las Vegas.
Thompson (1-1) scattered 11 hits as the 23rd-ranked Buckeyes improved to 5-3. He struck out seven.
The Buckeyes roughed up Dave Wheeler (0-2), who got his first start as the Cougars look for a fourth starter. Mike Lockwood, who had a leadoff shot in the first inning, Dan Zabloudil and Chad Ehrnsberger homered for Ohio State.
Steve Gleason homered for WSU (6-5) in the fifth and Scott Randall went 2 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to six games. However, Shawn Stevenson saw his school-record 28-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 collar.
Jeff Scherer’s single scored Casey Kelley with WSU’s other run in the sixth.
WSU, 1-1 in the 18th Annual UNLV/Coors Desert Classic, is to play twice today, against Oral Roberts and Cal State Northridge.
Eric Brown delivered Jason Francek from second base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Whitworth rallied for a 9-8 victory over visiting Western Baptist at Merkel Field.
Francek, who drove in three runs for the Pirates, and Tim Bishop were on second and first when Brown smacked his second hit of the game, this one into the gap in right-center, to produce the winning run.
Miguel Andrews was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Pirates (2-4).
The Pirates play Whitman in a doubleheader today in Walla Walla, then Sunday meet Eastern Oregon.
Hockey
The Osoyoos Heat closed out the best-of-7 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Neil Murdoch Division playoff series against Spokane in five games with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Braves Friday night.
Tyler Keller and Norm Lochten scored for the Braves, who outshot the Heat 32-29, but couldn’t get enough pucks past David Wood.
