Insulating Home May Provide Tax Break

Idahoans who installed insulation or alternative energy systems in their homes in 1997 may quality for tax breaks the next four years.

Only primary residences built before 1976 qualify. Homeowners can claim a tax deduction from their taxable income for the total cost of insulation, thermal or storm doors and windows, caulking and weatherstripping. The insulation cannot be replacement insulation.

Alternative energy devices also allow homeowners to deduct 40 percent of the cost, but no more than $5,000, if it was installed in 1997.
