Children’s Groups Perform

Two of Spokane’s children’s groups will be performing in concert on Sunday.

The Junior and Concert Choirs of the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus will present “A Little Music for a Sunday Afternoon II” at 3 p.m. at Westminster Congregational Church, 411 S. Washington.

The performance will feature the youngest members of the children’s chorus and will be conducted by Tamara Schupman and Thara Cooper. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by calling the children’s chorus office at 624-7992.

The Spokane Youth Symphony will perform the “Age of Exuberance” featuring solo performances by Kevin Boden, viola, and Jeff Lewis, trumpet, at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Met. The concert, conducted by Vern Windham, will feature German music from 1770-1870. The event will be preceded by a silent auction at 6 p.m. Items up for bid include several antiques and a caricature of conductor Vern Windham.

Barbershop singing contest

Quartets from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia will gather at Whitworth College this weekend for the Barbershop Harmony Society International’s regional quartet and chorus competition.

The preliminary rounds begin at 7 p.m. Friday in the Cowles Auditorium at Whitworth. The finals are at 3 p.m. Saturday. The top three quartets will advance to the international competition in July in Atlanta, Ga.

In addition, the Division 5 Evergreen District chorus contest will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. The district includes Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.

The top finishers in both the chorus and quartet contests will perform at the “Show of Champions” at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The competition is being hosted by the Pages of Harmony, Spokane’s barbershop chapter.

Tickets for the first three events are $8 each. Tickets for the “Show of Champions” are $15, and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 448-7516.

Pickett piano recital

Pianist and composer John Pickett will present a classical piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Berean Bible Church, 10910 E. Boone.

Pickett, a professor at Central Washington University, has performed in New York City’s Carnegie Hall, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He received his Doctor of Music in piano performance from Indiana University, and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Juilliard.

The recital will include music by Chopin, Gershwin, Washington State University professor Charles Argersinger, and one of Pickett’s own works. Pickett’s visit is sponsored by the piano studios of Marlene Haney and Mary Simpson. Tickets are $5, available at the door.
