Gambill Wins Again

Jan-Michael Gambill of Colbert, Wash., continued his strong play by defeating Spain’s Francisco Clavet 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday in the second round of the Newsweek Champions Cup tennis tournament.

Gambill will take on two-time Champions Cup winner Jim Courier today. Courier advanced with a three-set victory over fifth-seeded Jonas Bjorkman.

Other second-round winners included No. 2 seed Petr Korda, No. 6 Greg Rusedski and Andre Agassi.

In the State Farm Evert Cup half of the tournament at Hyatt Grand Champions Resort, top-ranked Martina Hingis beat fifth-seeded Conchita Martinez 6-1, 7-5.

That set Hingis up for a semifinal showdown with Venus Williams, who rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Joannette Kruger.
