Day-Care Center Operator Pleads Innocent To Hurting Tot

An Olympia man accused of shaking a 3-monthold girl at the day-care center he operated and causing permanent blindness in one of her eyes has pleaded innocent to assault charges.

Mark Buffington Berkey, 35, entered the plea Wednesday in Thurston County Superior Court. He faces trial June 1 on charges of first- and third-degree assault. If convicted, he would face up to 12 years in prison.
