Bishop Will Appear In Four Telecasts

Roman Catholic Bishop William Skylstad of the Spokane Diocese will once again be featured in weekly conversations on KHQ-TV starting Sunday.

“Time With the Bishop” will air Sundays at 4 p.m. through this month, with the final installment on Easter Sunday, April 12. Each of the four segments will focus on changes in the church since Vatican II.

The first show, “Ecumenism,” was filmed at the Cathedral of St.

John the Evangelist and includes a dialogue with Episcopal Bishop Jeff Terry. The second segment, “Church as Good Samaritan,” will include an interview with Sister Mary Rose McGeady, director of Covenant House International, an organization based in New York City that works with street children.

The third show, “Liturgy and Laity,” includes conversations with the residents of the Cathedral Plaza, a Catholic Charities-sponsored apartment complex for seniors in downtown Spokane.

The final segment, on Easter Sunday, will be on the topic of “The Tomb and Transformation.” It will show the bishop’s Easter message given at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. Skylstad also will speak with a single mother and a doula (mother’s helper) from Childbirth and Parenting Alone, a Catholic Charities program that works with single parents.

Each segment will be rebroadcast on Gonzaga University’s cable Channel 15 at 7:30 p.m. the Monday through Sunday after its Channel 6 broadcast.

Network notes first year

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is marking its first anniversary this weekend by honoring volunteers.

The network is composed of churches in the Spokane area that provide food and shelter for homeless families. The program provides families assistance in obtaining housing and jobs.

Several participating churches are planning special events to honor the many volunteers who make the program happen. More than 2,600 volunteers throughout the area have donated 14,200 volunteer hours in the past year.

The network helps an average of three families per month and has served 30 families with children in its first year. The average length of stay for each family was 25 days.

Zen retreat scheduled

A Zen meditation retreat featuring Edward Espe Brown, a Zen priest since 1971, will be at the Tum Tum Retreat Center on March 28. The retreat will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
