Jordan Hille Receives Ewu Trust Scholarship

Jordan Hille, Spokane, received a $1,000 Wittenbach Trust Scholarship for the 1997-98 year at Eastern Washington University. This scholarship was established by the will of Millie Wittenbach and is awarded to students majoring in a health care program.

Hille is a 1997 graduate of Northwest Christian High School in Colbert, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Hille is currently majoring in dental hygiene. Her parents are Dwight and Janet Hille of Spokane.

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Foundation’s Board of Directors awarded $8,000 to the Gonzaga University journalism program. The Foundation also awarded journalism student L’Zaria Banks a $1,000 Pennington scholarship.

Ritzville Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter became the National Champions at the National FFA Convention. With 30,000 FFA members, the Ritzville chapter will represent the State of Washington, Ritzville High School and the community.

Forrest Bale, Spokane, has been initiated into the Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity by the chapter at Centre College, Ohio. He is the son of Brad and Pam Bale of Spokane and a graduate of Ferris High School.

Mimi Tran, Spokane, was selected as a United Parcel Service Scholar and received a $1,500 scholarship. She is a finance major at the University of Portland. Tran was chosen for this scholarship based on her achievements and grade point average.

Nance Van Winckel, a professor in the graduate creative writing program at Eastern Washington University, was awarded a $5,000 literary fellowship from Washington State’s Artist Trust. The fellowship was distributed in partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. It was one of six awarded to Washington writers. She is currently working on “The Land of Anarchy,” a collection of interrelated short stories.

Army Private Peter Bearcomesout has graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. His training included instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions. He is the son of June Bearcomesout of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Sonya Smith has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Smith is the daughter of Louis and Ok Hui Smith of Liberty Lake. Her training included studying the Air Force mission, organization and customs, and received special training in human relations. She is a 1997 graduate of Central Valley High School.
