Nic’s Student Newspaper Receives National Honors

The Sentinel, North Idaho College’s student newspaper, received two national awards at the Associated Collegiate Press conference recently held in San Francisco.

The newspaper took second place in the two-year college tabloid competition for its Dec. 11 issue under the direction of Sue Jurgens, who served as fall semester managing editor.

Third place was also awarded in the college broadsheet (full-size) category for the Feb. 19 issue under the direction of new managing editor, Ryan MacClanathan. The paper switched to a broadsheet format this semester.

The following University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music students have been recognized at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held in February.

Brian Ploeger, outstanding trumpet player; Mike Ayer, outstanding trombonist, solo division; Dennis Greely and Kevin Hudson, vocal soloist runner-ups; and U of I Lionel Hampton School of Music, Combo III, college instrumental combo runner-up.

Anneke Bennett, R.N., clinical supervisor of the medical unit at Kootenai Medical Center, has been named the March Employee of the Month.

Bennett, a KMC employee since 1989 was commended for her outstanding work ethic, teamwork, and adherence to the values of the KMC Mission Statement.

She previously worked at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago and a St. Petersburg, Fla., medical service insurance company. She credits KMC with providing a sense of family, creative freedom and focus on patient care and progressive management.

Scott McArthur, a Post Falls High School senior, has been chosen as the Post Falls Rotary Student of the Month for February.

McArthur, son of Betty and Lew McArthur, maintains a 3.1 grade-point average and has been on the honor roll throughout his high school years.

He is active in French Club, varsity football, basketball, track and St. George’s Catholic Church.

McArthur, who is employed by the Post Falls Park and Recreation Department, was voted junior prom and homecoming king, Mr.

Personality and is active as a D.A.R.E. role model and youth athletic coach.

He plans to attend the University of Idaho majoring in civil engineering and would like to become a business owner.

Charles Settle has been named the February Employee of the Month by his co-workers at Best Western Templin’s Resort Hotel in Post Falls.

Settle, who was hired by Templin’s as an inside maintenance worker in 1996 and later promoted to outside maintenance assistant, was noted for meeting high expectations and the eagerness to help other departments.

Benewah Medical Center, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s award winning medical facility, recently received a three-year accreditation certificate from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Inc.

The accreditation, which means BMC has met nationally recognized standards for quality health care, was bestowed after an extensive on-site survey.

BMC has received numerous national awards for quality services and offers medical care to Indian and non-Indian patients with plans to open a Wellness Center in midsummer.

The Steve and Marian Pelsma family of Coeur d’Alene was chosen as the 1998 Family of the Year by St. Pius Council No. 11623, Knights of Columbus.

The Pelsmas, along with their three children, Bre, Chriss and Andrew, were recognized for their active involvement in the parish and community.

Steve, who joined the Knights in 1995 and is the field agent and fraternal benefits advisor for the North Idaho Knights serving 14 parish councils in North Idaho and the Spokane valley, also serves as Chairman for the parish fund-raiser, Renew 2000 co-coordinator, committee person at Holy Family Catholic School and is involved with many functions.

Marian serves on the parish council, the Liturgical Committee and previously led a youth Bible study. She is employed as sales manager for Nextel Corp. in the Spokane valley.

The children are active in youth sports, religious classes and the Coeur d’Alene Squires Circle, a junior Knight group.
