Students Mean Business When It Comes To Deca

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Several South Side high school students are heading for Denver.

Six students from Ferris and Lewis and Clark high schools have qualified for national competition of the Distributive Education Clubs of America April 24-29 in Denver.

More than 2,500 students competed at the state level March 5-7 in Bellevue, said Ferris DECA adviser Steve Backlund.

Five Ferris seniors will be among those going south. They are:

Lisa Lorenzen and Meg McFarland, third place, advertising team event.

Grant Darigol and Tabitha Wells, qualifiers, chapter awards manuals.

Jaclyne Smith, qualifier, merit awards program.

From Lewis and Clark, junior Matt Pomrenke placed third overall in food marketing and will also move on to nationals.

Clowning around at Hutton Elementary

The annual Hutton Carnival is back in town this weekend. The carnival runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and will feature 25 events, including carnival rides, car racing, face painting and a country store.

The Hutton Bistro will offer a traditional carnival menu, including pizza, popcorn, soft pretzels and hot dogs.

More than 100 prizes - including two bicycles, savings bonds and a three-month gym membership - will be raffled off.

For more information, call Hutton Elementary at 353-4434.

Ferris department head honored

Sharon Straub, chair of Ferris High School’s English department, has received the 1998 Excellence Award from the Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Straub has worked on regional development of writing assessments and the criteria used to evaluate the assessments.

She is also involved in Ferris’ school-to-career FOCUS program.

“She knows the meaning of such words as hard work, dedication, perseverance and loyalty,” a colleague said in nominating her.

Straub was recognized at the school board’s March 11 meeting.

Grant students don’t throw it away

Grant Elementary sixth-graders have spent the year organizing a collecting and recycling program. The students sort used paper into designated paper bins and turn it in to be recycled.

So far this year, they’ve contributed $1,438 to the school’s general fund through their work.
